Recently 12 area graduates returned to T.S. Cooley, their elementary alma mater, to share their life goals, memories and visit the halls that they once walked only 7 years ago. It was a wonderful morning filled with great friends and fond memories. Where ever your road leads you, we wish you success and happiness.
Special thanks to all the family members that volunteered their time, food, and monetary donations for teacher and staff appreciation week. We appreciate all the hard work Mrs. Murphy and Ms. Istre put in getting ready for this week long event. It was truly enjoyed by all!
Ethan W., third grade student, and Shreya T., fourth grade student, competed at the Super Nationals VI Chess Championships in Nashville, Tennessee May 12 - 14. Ethan competed in the K-3 Under 1000 section of the tournament and won 5 of his 7 games. Ethan received a trophy for placing 14th out of 147 players in his section. Ethan, also, played a 3 1/2 hour Simultaneous Exhibition Game against Grand Master Sabina Foisor. Shreya played in the K-5 Under 900 section of the tournament and won 2 of her 7 games. 5,578 students from across the United States competed in this championship tournament which included 7 games of chess in three days. Chess club sponsor, Mrs. Lanier, also attended the tournament, as well as her son, Justin Lanier, a PhD student at Georgia Tech, who coached the students during the tournament. Three T.S. Cooley students were honored at May's CPSB school board meeting for being state Zaner Bloser Handwriting winners. Their entries will now go on to national competition. The kindergarten winner is Kamryn W. The 1st grade winner is Megan B. and the 2nd grade winner is Lilli D.
Recently two T.S. Cooley students were honored at the 2017 Law Day Ceremony at the Lake Charles Courthouse for their submissions to the annual essay and poster contest sponsored by the Southwest LA Bar Association. 4th Grader, Emma V. won 1st place for her essay, “Order in the Court” and 2nd grader, Landry Q. won 1st place for her law day poster.
Thanks to the generous Matching Gift Program of Phillips 66, the library was able to purchase a colorful beach themed rug which was placed in the "Beach Reading Center" to the delight of the students! The library greatly appreciates the generous donation of grand-parent, Darren Cole, during our book fair, which Phillips 66 matched. Pictured are some of our second grade students enjoying reading and relaxing time at the "beach!"
4th grader, Parker M. recently took the top prize at the AR pep rally for most AR points: an autographed baseball from the McNeese baseball players. He was also recognized at the May school board meeting for being one of only a handful of students that have over 1000 accelerated reading points!
The ballroom dance team won gold and overall in the final parish competition. Team members were Layla N., Pierce S., Laila R., Dillon H., Sydney L., Gurshan T., Anna Leigh S., Zachary L., Elizabeth G., Christian G., A'laya F. and Matthew G.
Jump Rope for Heart was a great success with $3323 raised. The highest single donor was 4th grader, Brayden G. who raised $395.
Members of the T.S. Cooley Chess team competed in New Orleans at the State Chess Tournament in April. In the K-2 section, Mahad J. won 4th place, In the K-4 section, Ethan W. won 1st Place and in the K-6 section, Austin B. won 9th place. The K-4 Team won 3rd place and the K-6 Team won 2nd place. Minh T. competed in the K-8 Open and won 4th place.
T.S. Cooley families raised $14,727 in our spring cookie dough fundraiser for library and technology. The top classrooms that received a party in a box were Mrs. Thompson’s 2nd grade and Mrs. Cappel’s 4th grade homerooms. The top 3 sellers were Kynzie B. with $939 in sales, Amari B. with $565 and Rhett G. with $482. Thank you for all your support.
