Louisiana has
transformed public education with the Reaching for Results Reform.
Reaching for Results include higher standards for what students
should know and be able to do, school and district accountability
increased resources for schools and students and LEAP 21.
LEAP for the 21st Century, LEAP 21, is the state’s
criterion-referenced testing program. These tests measure how well a
student has mastered the new state content standards. LEAP 21 is
given in grades 4, 8, 10, and 11.
There are three main differences between the new LEAP 21 and the
previous state tests. First, these tests are directly aligned with
the new state content standards. Second, by law these tests must be
as difficult as the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP)
tests. Finally, students will no longer receive a simple
“pass/fail,” but will receive one of five achievement ratings.
The test is divided into four parts: English-Language Arts, Math,
Science, and Social Studies.
Students will receive scores of one of the five achievement levels:
Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic Proficient, and Mastery.
Students must pass the LEAP 21 tests by scoring at the Approaching
Basic level or higher in English-Language Arts and Math to move to
the next grade.
Testing occurs in the month of March and results are usually
reported to parents between the second and fourth week in May.
Students that will need to attend summer school are notified first.
