Thought for the Week
The secret of happiness is to make others believe they are the cause of it.

CPSB Email Issue
The CPSB email server went down on Thursday. The source of problem was due to email users sending and receiving many large attachments and not clearing out their mailbox by either downloading or deleting all messages in their server mailbox. As a result, the maximum amount of information that can be kept in the mailbox has now been lowered to 10MB. At this point the user’s mailbox will be frozen until he or she deletes items in the mailbox.

For information on how to clean out your CPSB mailbox, go to the CPSB Tech Support website at http://help.cpsb.org and click on the “Tech Guides” link and then look under the “Email (Microsoft Outlook)” section to view the document titled “Cleaning Out Your Mailbox" or click on this link to directly access the file: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/tech_help/guides/Outlook/Cleaning_Out_Your_Mailbox.pdf.

Web Search Secrets from TechTV
How do you begin to search the Web efficiently and effectively for the right information? Start with these dos and don'ts for scouring the Web.
  • Do use the most common words that describe your search.
  • Don't be afraid to type in keywords that come to mind.

Here are five tips to maximize your searches with Google.

  1. Try it, you'll like it
    • Do what seems obvious first.
    • Don't be intimidated. Type in single or multiple keywords.
    • Don't bother with advanced search techniques, such as +, -, quotes, and so on, unless the most obvious keywords don't work.
  2. Search for keywords
    • Do provide several keywords that you think will appear in the search result.
    • Don't format a query in the form of a question. For example, if you want to see Internet pages about parachuting safety tips, type in the words "parachuting safety" without including the words "pages" or "about."
  3. Use quotes
    • Do use quotation marks to perform a phrase search. For example, to search for the book Wuthering Heights, use quotation marks around the entire title.
  4. Read all about it
    • Do read the snippets. Most search engines offer summary text with each search result. Google calls the summary text a snippet. The snippets will help you save time and provide an idea of what the webpage is about.
    • Do save time by picking out the best results from there.
  5. Looks like, sounds like
    • Do try the Web Directory to search for a general topic and not a keyword.
    • Do try Similar Pages to find other pages related to your search.
Windows XP Tip
Hidden in Windows XP's System Information utility is a very good tool for getting a lot more information about what's going on. Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information. Then choose Net Diagnostics from the Tools menu. The program will ping your DNS servers, gateways, SMTP and POP3 mail servers, and proxies; test your modem and network adapters; and supply very detailed reports about your settings, as well as which tests passed and which failed.
Microsoft Excel Tip
Did you ever want to change the height or width of selected columns or rows?  You can apply the same change to more than one row or column by selecting the rows or columns you want to change and then dragging the border of one of the selected rows or columns to the desired location.  When you release the mouse button, all of the selected rows or columns will change to the new height or width.
T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R. -- Kidspiration Templates
The site has a large section of pre-made Kidspiration templates and graphic organizers to download and use in your classroom. Pre-K to 5th grade. http://www.globalclassroom.org/together/kidspiration.html
Enter Line Breaks in Excel
You can control the line breaks for multiple-line headings or labels in your Microsoft Excel worksheet, just like you do in Microsoft Word. Here's how to do it.
  1. Click the cell where you want the label or heading to appear.
  2. Type the first line of information.
  3. Press ALT+ENTER.
  4. Type the second line. Then repeat step 3 if you have additional lines to enter.
  5. Press ENTER when you've finished typing.
Moving or Copying Files From a Single Window
Moving or copying files? You don't need to see the destination on screen, as you would dragging files across a two-paned Explorer window, or from one window to another. In Windows XP, every Explorer window offers "Move this file" and "Copy this file" commands.

Open any folder window and select the file(s) or folder(s) you'd like to move or copy. Click the "Move this file" or "Copy this file" option from the list on the left, and in the resulting window, navigate your way to the destination folder. To complete the operation, click "Move" or "Copy."
Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 118 infected computers out of a total of 6758 OfficeScan clients.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs.
