Win a $30,000 HP Grant for Your School!
The HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative is designed to support innovative and effective uses of technology in the classroom setting. In 2005, HP will grant awards to K-12 public schools that are using a collaborative, team-based approach to implementing technology integration projects. The activities of the project must be focused on using technology to teach, rather than on teaching students to use technology. The value of the grant award to each school is at least $30,000. Based on the outcomes of those projects, some recipients will have the opportunity to receive additional, higher value grants from HP in 2006.

HP will select teams of five teachers from approximately 75 schools to receive the equipment, professional development and support they need to effectively integrate technology into their instruction. Preference will be given to projects that address mathematics and/or science. Preference will also be given to schools that serve a high proportion of low-income students, relative to their district or state’s free and reduced price lunch percentages. The teams of five teachers that apply for this grant award must be formed in a way that supports the goals of their proposed technology integration projects. Examples include, but are not limited to: a group of teachers teaching the same subject at a high school; a group of teachers across one grade level at an elementary school; a group of middle school teachers integrating the teaching of science or mathematics with other academic subjects.

Proposals must be completed in an online grant application system accessed via the HP Technology for Teaching website at www.hp.com/go/hpteach and submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Visit the HP grant link at www.hp.com/go/hpteach for all the details.

4 Ways to Build Data-Driven Classrooms
The No Child Left Behind legislation has made data-driven instruction a mantra for most educators. But making data part of instructional planning can be challenging, especially if teachers are not used to thinking about assessment and data as a regular part of the process. Here are some helpful tips by Larry Berger: http://www.scholastic.com/administrator/octnov04/articles.asp?article=pluggedin&#4ways

Windows 98 and the CPSB Domain
Having older Windows 98 machines on the network are sometimes the only option for some schools in our district. This operating system has some difficulty communicating with our network. There are a few things that you can do to help the machines communicate more effectively with the domain. Below are steps that you can follow to “tweak” the TCP/IP settings on the Windows 98 computers to help them out:
  • Right click on network neighborhood
  • click on properties
  • click on the identification tab
  • highlight and copy the computer name / make sure that the workgroup is CPSB.
  • click on the configuration tab
  • click on TCP/IP
  • click on properties
  • click on the DNS Configuration Tab
  • click on Enable DNS
  • paste that computer name in the HOST name box
  • put in CPSB.ORG where it says domain
  • in the box that has ___ . ___ . ___ . ___ type in 10.200.0.240
  • click on the add button
  • click on the Wins Configuration Tab
  • click on Enable Wins Resolution
  • in the box that has ___ . ___ . ___ . ___ type in 10.200.0.246, click the add button.
  • click on OK, to get back to the system properties
  • click on the Client for Microsoft Networks
  • click on properties
  • Uncheck the box to login into an NT domain if it is checked
  • make sure that the Windows NT Domain box reads: cpsb.org.

Click on Apply and Restart the computer.

These “tweaks” do not fix the problem always and in some cases the computer may never fully communicate with the network, that’s the bad news about the operating system. If you are still having problems just send an email to tech.help@cpsb.org for further assistance.

  • click on "use an existing location" and click on "NEXT"
  • click on "select location"
  • click on the plus sign next to My Network Places
  • click on the plus sign next to Entire Network
  • click on the plus sign next to Microsoft Windows Network
  • click on the plus sign next to CPSB
  • scroll down to your server (ex. ServerXXa where "XX" is the number of your server)

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 814 infected computers out of a total of 9349 OfficeScan clients.

The latest OfficeScan pattern as of 10-26-2004 is pattern 2.216.00.  Please check your pattern by placing your cursor over the OfficeScan icon and viewing the pop-up window that appears. If your pattern is significantly different than this (A HIGHER PATTERN NUMBER IS OK), please email tech.help@cpsb.org regarding this or any other question you have regarding OfficeScan.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.

THANKSGIVING SONGS AND POEMS:
http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/songspoems9.html
A good deal of these songs and poems focus on that terrific Thanksgiving standby, the turkey. Students can dress as Pilgrims to recite a poem or act one out; see if a few brave souls are willing to be the turkeys as well.

GIVING THANKS:
http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2001/11/111901_thanksgiving.jhtml
Students will learn about the history of Thanksgiving celebrations and feasts in America, how different presidents chose to celebrate it (or not), and how it was tied to a successful harvest. They will then explore different harvest and Thanksgiving celebrations around the world, comparing and contrasting different events and celebrations, and attempting to trace their own cultural traditions to earlier gatherings.

THANKFUL TURKEY:

This creative project uses construction paper, glue, and geometric shapes to create a turkey, where the colorful feathers become little notes for all the things your students are thankful for.
