Thought for the Week
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Register Now for Online Workshops
Region V TLTC is offering the Online Moderated Workshop "Searching for Success".  This is a 6-week online moderated workshop which will begin April 9 (after testing). Teaching students to use the Internet is much more complex than simply using a search engine to surf the web. Searching for information is a skill that needs to be taught. This course is designed to provide you with the tools needed to successfully explore information on the Internet and make meaning of what is accessed.

The cost of the workshop is $50 and you will be awarded 12 CLUs for professional development for successfully completing the course.

To register, go to www.cpsb.org/resources/regionv and click on "Course Registration" in the left frame. You will be prompted to enter your account number (your SS# without the dashes). If you don’t have an account you will need to create one at this time. Finally, select "Register for Institutes, Online Workshops or Graduate Credit Courses". You will find both the spring and summer sessions being offered.

The 2005 National Tech Plan is Online
The new National Education Technology Plan 2004, Toward a New Golden Age in American Education: How the Internet, the Law and Today's Students Are Revolutionizing Expectation, was released on Friday, January 7, 2005. The plan establishes a national vision and strategy that supports the effective use of technology to improve student academic achievement and prepare students for the 21st century. The new national plan will require each state to revise and update the state’s technology plan and that will result in each district and school being required to update and certify their plans. Stay tuned for news on how we will update all of the Calcasieu tech plans. To view or download a copy of the plan visit: http://www.nationaledtechplan.org

Office Tip
Did you know you could customize "AutoCorrect" by adding, deleting, or changing words at the AutoCorrect dialog box in Microsoft Office? Commonly misspelled words or typographical errors are already in AutoCorrect; but, these options can be changed by clicking "Tools" and then "AutoCorrect Options...". Several options display at the beginning of the AutoCorrect dialog box. If a check appears in the box before the option, the option is active. If you consistently misspell a word such as "oopen" instead of "open," you can add the "oopen" to AutoCorrect. The next time you type "oopen" and then press the spacebar, AutoCorrect changes it to "open."

To add a word to AutoCorrect:

  • Click "Tools" and then "AutoCorrect Options..." to display the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  • In the "Replace" text box, type the misspelled word.
  • In the "With" text box, type the corrected spelling for the word.
  • Click the Add button.

To Delete a word from AutoCorrect:

  • Click "Tools" and then "AutoCorrect Options..." to display the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  • Click the desired word in the list box (you may need to click the down-arrow to display the desired word).
  • Click the Delete button.
  • AutoCorrect will no longer automatically correct that word.

Office Tip

Customize The Contents of a Merge Document Based on a Value -- Have you ever wished you could customize the contents of a merge letter based on the values stored in a merge field? You can do just that with the If...Then...Else... merge field. Let's say that in your monthly statement to customers, you want to show the number of transactions for the month, a number stored in your data source in a field called TransCount. If the value in TransCount is 1, you want to print "1 transaction." If the value in TransCount is 0 or greater than 1, you want to make the word "transaction" plural, as in "0 transactions" or "22 transactions."

Follow these steps:

  • Go to Tools | Mail Merge, and edit your main document.

  • On the Mail Merge toolbar, click the Insert Merge Field button, and select TransCount.

  • Press the spacebar after the <<TransCount>> field, and type transaction in the main document.

  • Click the Insert Word Field button, and choose If...Then...Else...

  • Select TransCount from the Field Name drop-down list, choose Equal To in the Comparison drop-down list, and type 1 in the Compare To field. (Leave the Insert This Text field blank.)

  • In the Otherwise Insert This Text field, type s, and click OK.

When you run the mail merge, the If...Then...Else... field will return nothing when the value in TransCount is 1, so the phrase in the merge document will appear as "1 transaction." In all other cases, the field will return the letter "s," which turns "transaction" into "transactions."

Classroom Management Tips
This site provides classroom management tips for those with one computer or multiple computers.  Examples include:

Managing Computer Rotations: Draw a horizontal line on a magnetic chalkboard and place a magnet with each student's initials on it under the line. When a student finishes the computer task, s/he would move her/his magnet above the line and tell a student that was still below the line that it was her/his turn. At the end of the day, the teacher could quickly assess (without lists, checks, or interruptions) how many had done the assignment and how many had not. The next day, those who had not yet completed the assignment would be first on the computers. When all were done (all magnets above the line), she would assign the next task and change the arrow so that it now pointed down.

Skill Groups: Divide the class into 5 groups. Have one group work on the computers independently (or as pairs or a team, as appropriate); one group work with the teacher learning a new technology (or other) skill/concept; and the other groups work independently on "skills" work (such as spelling, math problems, etc.).

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 561 infected computers out of a total of 9535 OfficeScan clients.

The latest OfficeScan pattern as of 1-11-2005 is pattern 2.333.00. Please check your pattern by placing your cursor over the OfficeScan icon and viewing the pop-up window that appears. If your pattern is significantly LOWER than this (A HIGHER PATTERN NUMBER IS OK), please email tech.help@cpsb.org regarding this or any other question you have regarding OfficeScan.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.
