Get GPSs for Your School
****Region V is sponsoring G.I.S. Day THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE GPSs FOR YOUR SCHOOL****

We are inviting Calcasieu Parish schools to participate in a state-wide project entitled, “Quest with GIS: Part Two."

Last year, Calcasieu had 97% of its schools participate in this project. You may recall last year the project focused on students solving emergency preparedness problems by using GIS (Graphic Information Systems) technology. Various activities were completed by the students including determining the global address of the front door of the school. Students then submitted this information to the Quest with GIS database.

The Louisiana Department of Education, through the Louisiana Center for Educational Technology, has prepared a project aligned with state curriculum standards called “Mapping the Past (Quest 2).” Region V TLTC will be sponsoring this event*. This is the second year that this event has been held and it is an opportunity for our students to participate in an activity that involves authentic, real-life application. It is designed to provide the state's children with a sense of appreciation, pride, and stewardship for Louisiana's historic locations. Students will be researching historical and cultural treasures such as a cemeteries, battlefields, or monuments and participating in lesson activities that will instill in them the importance of the need to care and preserve our heritage. Grade specific lesson plans have been developed for K-4, 5-8, and 9-12 classroom teachers. Lessons span 3-5 days depending on class duration. Complete project details are available as an Adobe Acrobat file at http://www.cpsb.org/regionv/gisday.pdf.

Register for participation by going to the Region V Course Registration site (Go to http://www.cpsb.org/regionv and click on Course Registration). Create an account (if you have not registered for a Region V TLTC since summer 2004) or login if you already have an account.  Then click on the corresponding GIS Project, either K-4, 5-8 or 9-12 listed under “Register for Institutes, Online Workshops, or Graduate Credit Courses.” Registration must be completed by January 20.

********IMPORTANT********

Teachers who register, collect, and submit the required data resulting in their data being displayed on the "Smart Map" at the site will receive a GPS (Note: A maximum of 5 GPSs will be given to one school.) GPS units are being supplied by the Calcasieu Parish Technology Department.

Video Clips Improve Math
Short video clips that reinforce key concepts, such as UnitedStreaming, are effective in increasing student achievement, according to a second research project. An earlier study found that video can improve learning in science and social studies. Now, brand-new research shows judiciously selected video clips also can produce statistically significant gains in algebra and geometry scores. To read the entire article go to: http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/showStory.cfm?ArticleID=5134 (You will have to register)

Clearing Formatting in Word
You can clear all formatting applied to text, such as styles, bullets, numbering, alignment, font, and other character and paragraph formatting by selecting the text, clicking the down-arrow at the right side of the Style button on the Formatting toolbar, and then clicking Clear Formatting. This same option is available on the Task Pane under Styles and Formatting. You can also clear formatting by selecting text, clicking Edit, pointing to Clear, and then clicking Formats or by applying the Normal style. Ctrl + Shift + N is the shortcut key command to apply the Normal style.

Palm Tip
The basic calculator that comes with Palm is a great tool to use in the classroom in many ways. One handy feature is the History. After students calculate their math problem, they can view and analyze the steps they took to arrive at the answer. To do this, simply click on the list menu, and then go to Options, and finally Show History. A list of the numbers and operations will appear. Students can choose OK, Clear, or Copy. If they select:
  • Copy - students can then launch another application such as Documents to Go or Memo and paste their history. Why do this? This is a great way to have students enter their explanations for each step in the calculation (something that can’t be done in the calculator application).
  • Clear - will erase all the calculations and students can start over (handy if student can see something that was not done correctly).
  • OK - will close the History and students can continue with their calculations.
The other handy feature is the ability to paste figures from other applications into the calculator. Let’s say you had a document with a few numbers that you would like to add together (and you don’t trust your own calculations). Just do the following:
  • Select or highlight the figure (numbers).
  • Go to the List menu, then Edit > Copy.
  • Launch the Calculator, go to the List Menu > Edit > Paste. The figure will be entered in the calculator (when you toggle between the calculator and other programs, the Palm keeps the information from your calculations until you Clear the memory.

Create a Custom Chart Type in Excel
When you want to use an existing chart format in a new chart, you can copy the existing chart and change the data source by going to Chart | Source Data. But if you need to create a number of charts based on the existing format, creating a user-defined chart type is more efficient. Follow these steps:
  • Select the existing chart whose format you want to use.
  • Go to Chart | Chart Type.
  • On the Custom Types tab, select User-defined.
  • Click the Add button, and enter a name for your new chart type.

The next time you use the Chart Wizard to create a chart, you'll be able to select your new custom chart type from the list of user-defined chart types on the Custom Types tab.

Do any of the following:
  • To insert a slide master (slide master: The slide that stores information about the design template applied, including font styles, placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.) that uses the default styles in Microsoft PowerPoint, on the Slide Master View toolbar, click Insert New Slide Master.
  • To insert a slide master by adding a new design template (design template: A file that contains the styles in a presentation, including the type and size of bullets and fonts; placeholder sizes and positions; background design and fill color schemes; and a slide master and optional title master.), on the Formatting toolbar, click Design , point to the design you want, click the arrow, and select one of the options on the shortcut menu.
  • To insert a title master (title master: The slide that stores information from the design template pertaining to styles on title slides, including placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.) for an existing slide master, select the slide master thumbnail on the left, and on the Slide Master View toolbar, click Insert New Title Master.

When you insert a new master or add a design template, the design appears in the Slide Design task pane under "Used in this presentation". The design is then available to apply to any new slides when you are working in normal view.

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers

Quilts have an aura of history about them, and rightly so. They can boast of a rich heritage in the arts, geometry, and American history. Investigate geometric patterns and how they relate to quilt design and history with this learning project. Then consider having your students create their own classroom quilt with fabric or paper blocks, depending on skill levels, reflecting important shared, current, or individual events.

QUILTS:
