Top 5 Reasons NOT to use Incredimail
We have recently encountered people having email problems that are using the free Incredimail product on the web. CPSB Tech Support Center will only support one email client and that is Microsoft Outlook version 97, 2000, XP, and 2003. We do not support Outlook Express or any other third party email clients such as Incredimail. So as a reminder, here are the top 5 reasons you should not use Incredimail:
  • People will be happy to get messages from you that don’t have annoying smiley faces across the bottom.
  • You won’t have to wonder whether Incredimail is tracking your email use.
  • Email wasn’t designed for presentations; leave the animations to PowerPoint.
  • Those smiley faces are now blocked by Outlook 2003 so lots of people won’t see them anyway.
  • The Incredimail website is now blocked by the district to prevent people from installing the software because of the support issues that have arisen.

Word Tip
While clicking and dragging is useful for selecting blocks of text, it can be cumbersome for finer selections, such as selecting individual characters or text that extends across multiple screens. Word's Extend Selection keyboard shortcut can help you make these selections more efficiently.

To activate this feature, follow these steps:

  • Move the cursor to the beginning of the text you want to select.
  • Press [F8]. (This highlights the EXT button in the status bar.)
  • Use the keyboard or the mouse to move the cursor to the end of the selection.
  • Press [Esc]. (This deselects the EXT button in the status bar.)

To select a line, press the up or down arrow keys. To select text to the end of the line, press [End]; press [Home] to select text to the beginning of a line. You can also press [Page Up], [Page Down], [Ctrl][Home], or [Ctrl][End] to move the cursor to the end of the selection.

You can also press [F8] only to select text.

  • To select a word, move the cursor to the word, and press [F8] twice.
  • To select a sentence, press [F8] three times.
  • To select a paragraph, press [F8] four times.
  • To select a section, press [F8] five times.
  • To select the entire document, press [F8] six times.
  • To shrink a selection, press [Shift][F8].

Palm Tip - Using Memos
The Memos application on the Palm handheld is a great resource for storing little notes and details quickly. After a while, your list of memos can get pretty extensive. A great way to organize them is to place them in categories. To assign a memo to a category, open the memo, tap Details, and select a category name. To add a new category, simply tap Edit Categories > New and enter a category name. Finally tap OK. The new category will appear on the category list; click OK once again.  Another great way to organize your memos is to place a symbol such as a plus (+) or asterisk (*) before a category name so it appears first on your category list.

Fun fact: Each memo can hold the equivalent of about 2,500 words, or about six single-spaced typewritten pages!

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 533 infected computers out of a total of 9360 OfficeScan clients.

The latest OfficeScan pattern as of 1-25-2005 is pattern 2.369.00. Please check your pattern by placing your cursor over the OfficeScan icon and viewing the pop-up window that appears. If your pattern is significantly LOWER than this (A HIGHER PATTERN NUMBER IS OK), please email tech.help@cpsb.org regarding this or any other question you have regarding OfficeScan.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.
