Thought for the Week
"The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but has no vision." -- Helen Keller

Teachers Participated in High Tech Hide and Seek Day
Region V TLTC held it's first ever High Tech Hide and Seek Day for teachers in the five parish region this past Saturday. Participants began their adventure at the Technology Training Center where they were introduced to the sport of Geocaching.

After getting acquainted with the GPS, participants set out to find the 15 Geocaches hidden by the Region V TLTC staff as well as the six Geocaches that are registered at the Official Geocache Site. At the end of the afternoon, participants had to find the final meeting place using only GPS coordinates (it was F.K. White). They received a resource CD of GPS lesson plans and prizes were awarded to teams finding the most caches, earning the most points, funniest story, and most unusual item found.

Mary Wilkinson and Susan Meche from the Career Center found a Travel Bug in one of the caches. A Travel Bug is a trackable item that moves from cache to cache, picking up stories along the way. It's location is tracked at the Geocache site and some Bugs travel all the way around the world.

Quick Calculations in Excel
You can quickly sum any numbers in Excel. Hold down your "Ctrl" key and click the cells containing the numbers you would like to add (the Ctrl key allows you to select any cell on the workbook). With the cells selected, look at the bottom of Excel’s window. The sum of the selected cells (SUM=”total”) appears along the bottom right side of the status bar. Now, right click anywhere on the status bar for additional options.

Internet Explorer Tip
Automatically enter the "www." and ".com" into an Internet Explorer's address by typing the name of the page and pressing CTRL + ENTER on the keyboard. For example if you type "google" and then press CTRL + ENTER, you will automatically be sent to the proper page.

Print a Blank Calendar using Outlook
Did you know you can use Outlook to print a blank calendar? Blank calendars may be useful to take notes on or to consult when you meet to discuss a project with your team.
  • On the "File" menu, point to "New", and then click "Folder".
  • On the "Go" menu, click "Folder List".
  • In the "Folder List", click the "Calendar" folder.
  • On the "File" menu, point to "Page setup", and then click the print style you want.
  • Select the print style options you want, and then click "Print".
  • The "Print" dialog box will appear in which you can select more options.
  • To print multiple calendars, select the start and end date under the Print Range.
  • Click "OK" to print.

Junk Email Options
If you have Microsoft Office 2003 then you have the "Junk Email" option.  Use this option to help protect you against Spam Email. To determine the version of Outlook you have, open Microsoft Outlook, click on "Help", and click on "About Microsoft Office Outlook".  Visit this site for help setting the "Junk Email Options": http://www.une.edu.au/itd/help/settings/filters.html#outlook.

Outlook 2003 is part of Office 2003.  If you would like to purchase Office 2003, go to: http://help.cpsb.org, click on Tech Purchases, and under the Software Heading you will see Office.   For further questions, please email tech.help@cpsb.org.

Outlook Tip
If you have created a contact in Outlook and that contact contains a fax number, Outlook views that number as a valid email address. Because of this, both the email address and the fax number will show up as separate contacts in your address book. To remedy this, go into the contact information and enter the word fax in front of the fax number.  This will remove the fax number entry from the contact list of your address book, but not eliminate the information.

Freeplay Music
Freeplay is a great source of music (mp3 format) for educational use. Freeplay's musical compositions and recordings may be used (broadcast, synchronized and/or copied) without fee, but limited to school grounds and classrooms.  http://www.freeplaymusic.com

PowerPoint Tip
To copy an object on your slide quickly and easily instead of using cut & paste, try this instead. Select the object you want to copy by clicking on it. Hold down the "CTRL" key on the keyboard. Click (with the left mouse button) and drag the object to the new position. Now try it again, but press the "Shift" key at the same time as the "CTRL" key.  This will keep the objects aligned. This technique is great for making diagrams etc.

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 5154 infected computers out of a total of 10395 OfficeScan clients.

The latest OfficeScan pattern as of 4-28-2005 is pattern 2.604.00. Please check your pattern by placing your cursor over the OfficeScan icon and viewing the pop-up window that appears. If your pattern is significantly LOWER than this (A HIGHER PATTERN NUMBER IS OK), please email tech.help@cpsb.org regarding this or any other question you have regarding OfficeScan.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: https://antivirus.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.
