The purpose of this letter is to inform you about a very important piece of legislation that has been in effect since its enactment by the 2003 Louisiana Legislature.

Please be advised that ACT 732 of the 2003 Legislative Session provides for the suspension of driving privileges of a student who is expelled or suspended from school or assigned to an alternative educational setting for ten or more consecutive days for committing certain infractions.  These infractions are as follows:

bullet

The sale or possession of drugs, alcohol, or any other illegal substance

bullet

The possession of a firearm

bullet

Any infraction involving assault or battery on a member of the school faculty or staff

Welfare and Attendance will notify the Department of Public Safety and Corrections of any student between the ages of fourteen and eighteen who has been subjected to a disciplinary action as defined by R. S. 17:416.1 (D).

This legislation applies to ALL students who are expelled or assigned to the Calcasieu Career Center for ten or more consecutive days.

Please feel free to contact me at 217-4230 should you have any questions or need more information.
