The T.S. Cooley Dance Team won gold and overall elementary team with the most points at The Whistle Stop’s Dancing Classrooms final event at Burton Coliseum on Sunday, May 3, 2015. The 5th grade Cooley Dance Team members are: Bryce W., Miah A., Bailey W., Lauren B., Alyssa H., Victoria P. (co-captain), Julian L-P., Darren M., Braidy P., Ethan V. (co-captain), Chanler W. and Braydon F.
Twenty T.S. Cooley students competed at the 2015 Louisiana Scholastic Chess Championships on Saturday, May 2, in Baton Rouge. These students are: Eli S., Mathius R., Ethan W., Ethan S. M., Taylor B., Brannan D., Shreya T., Jake S., Robby F., Zachary L., Jackson P., Luke G., Billy G., Austin B., Mackenzie B., Camden Y., Jacob S. M., Ashton Q., Jordan M., and Jackson S. The Kindergarten-2nd grade team placed 2nd in the state competition with a total score of 11.5 points. Team members whose scores counted toward this award were: Shreya T. - 3 points, Ethan W. - 3 points, Jake S. - 3 points, and Brannan D. - 2.5 points. Shreya T. earned a 9th place individual trophy and Ethan W. earned a 7th place individual trophy. In the Kindergarten - 6th grade Section, Jackson S. earned a 3rd place individual trophy.
Julius R. in Mrs. Jordan's class was chosen for having the best kindergarten handwriting in the United States based on the results of the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Annual Contest. Julius will receive a trophy, certificate and a check for $1000 and his teacher has been invited to the International Literacy Conference in St. Louis, MO in July. 1st grader C.J. B. and 2nd grader Breonna G. both won state medals and will be presented along with Julius at the May 12th Calcasieu Parish School Board Meeting. T.S. Cooley will also receive $1200 to spend on Zaner-Bloser materials for the classrooms.
Fifty-nine T.S. Cooley students participated in the spring session of the Rowdy's Readers Program. These fifty-nine students read and tracked in their reading logs a total of 93,578 pages. They will all receive a free ticket to attend the McNeese baseball game on Sunday, April 26 and a bookmark. The class with the most pages read was Mrs. Blevins' class with a total of 15 students participating and reading 20,203 pages. Grade level winners were: Kindergartener Zoya N. - 4620 pages, 1st Grader C.J. B. - 6549 pages, 2nd Grader Matthew F. - 2562 pages, 3rd Grader Christina B. - 8857 pages, 4th Grader LaTroy P. - 1668 pages, and 5th grader Darren M. - 7346 pages. T.S. Cooley had 4 overall Calcasieu Parish winners: Zoya N., C.J. B., Mathew F. and Christina B. They will take the field before the game for the National Anthem and to throw out the first pitch.
