Description:  According to the United Nations’ telecommunications agency (March 2009), North European countries and South Korea have the most advanced telecoms and computer development in the world. South Korea is the world’s No. 1 with average connection speed of 15 Mbps, ten times the global average. Japan ranks 2nd in terms of Internet connection and high speed connectivity, above 7 Mbps. The United States is at the 17th position with an Internet connection speed of 3.9 Mbps (Ocean of Web, 2009). It is important that teacher education students understand and experience the high technology including high speed Internet access in the overseas classroom before becoming in-service teachers so that they can bring their extensive field experience into their future classrooms. Northwestern State University has sent two groups of teacher education and English majors to South Korean classrooms to provide knowledge and skills to Korean students in daily subject areas as well as introduce Louisiana culture to Korean students and teachers. A second objective of this program is to give the participants the opportunity to learn about high technology usage including high speed Internet access not only in the classroom but in every educational environment. In an effort to meet the purposes of the university study/teaching abroad program and to address some of the challenges commonly faced, online courses using Blackboard, Skype, and Facebook were developed by the coordinating professor. The coordinating professor, having personal knowledge of the area and being a product of Korean educational system, provided high quality instruction and support that is not usually available in typical study abroad programs. This presentation will give more detailed information about the study/teaching aboard program as well as the opportunity of in-service teachers’ participation to teach in South Korean classrooms.
