Class Descriptions


Beginning Windows XP - Find out how Windows XP can help you work efficiently. In this class you will be introduced to the Windows XP Operating System, which has a whole new look.  Learn Windows XP basics such as the desktop, Start Menu, and taskbar.  Learn to create shortcuts and cleanup your desktop.  Also, learn basic file management and how to personalize your own desktop.  This basic course must be taken first to get a basic understanding of computers.   

Beginning Word 2003 -  This basic word processing class is a must to learn all the basic Microsoft®  features of the entire Office suite.  Use the improved tools of Microsoft® Word, such as task panes, to develop professional, collaborative writing projects.  Learn to create, edit, and save a document.  Manipulate the format of the document utilizing the various tools on the standard and drawing toolbar.  This is the basic course for all other Microsoft® Office programs. Prerequisite: Participants must have had Beginning Windows.  

Intermediate Word 2003 -  This course is designed to extend the concepts covered in the introduction to Microsoft Word and present new concepts in the areas of using autotext, section breaks, adding borders and shading, using bullets and numbering, creating and editing tables, using graphics and editing pictures.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.  

Advanced Word 2003 Learn to further manipulate Word files, templates, and more.  The advanced features of Word will assist in creating extras, tables, and enhance documents with special features such as charts, diagrams, images, and styles.  Learn more about reviewing and merging documents, using the Template Wizard, and inserting special features in Word with advanced tips and tricksPrerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows, Beginning and Intermediate Word.

Beginning Excel 2003 -  Learn Excel basics of how to enter data and work with rows, columns, cells, toolbars, shortcut menus, and format your worksheet to catch anyone’s eye.  Learn the basic features of Excel …sure to make you an Excel XPert!  Learn to manipulate data by using formulas.  Create great spreadsheets by formatting worksheets and using borders and shading.  Also, learn to identify your Excel documents with a header or a footer.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.

Intermediate Excel 2003- Once the basics of Excel are learned, it's time to move on to more challenging uses.  Learn how to move data within and between workbooks, manage worksheets, format with styles, insert comments, insert images and WordArt,  use Excel templates, and more.  Format your Excel spreadsheets into reports and learn the user-friendly features of Excel XP.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows, Beginning Word, and Beginning Excel.

Beginning PowerPoint 2003 - Learn the basics of this complete presentation graphics package. Create professional presentations by using templates, animation, the Slide Design task pane, and more. Add art from the Clip Gallery, insert sounds, movies, and add pictures using the new picture compression feature. With PowerPoint you will be producing your own slides, handouts, speaker’s notes, and your outline, all in one file.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.

Desktop Publishing I -  Learn the basics of Microsoft® Publisher to create cards, newsletters, banners, business cards, and more. As with all Office programs, the new task pane provides a single location where users can create new files, open existing files, and design their publications. You can also customize toolbars and menus just as you can other Microsoft® Office programs.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.  PowerPoint knowledge would be a plus.

Desktop Publishing II -  Once you’ve learned the basics of Microsoft® Publisher, it’s time to create more products. Learn more about creating cards, newsletters, banners, business cards, and more. As with all Office XP/2003 programs, the new task pane provides a single location where users can create new files, open existing files, and design their publications. You can use all of the OfficeArt tools, including transparency and 3-D effects. Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.  PowerPoint knowledge would be a plus.

Outlook Email – Learn the basics of email using Microsoft® Outlook.  Participants will check and read email, send and reply to email, and set up contacts to make email a user-friendly tool.  With Outlook, users can sort email or view email in several different views.  Users will also learn how to open, read, and send attachments to other users and much more.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word. 

Internet Surfing – Learn basic Internet terminology and a few good help sites.  Also learn to use Internet Explorer to access the web.  Narrowing the search is half the battle in finding exactly what you want on the web.  Also, learn to bookmark, organize, and access your favorite websites once you locate them.  Print information from the web or transfer bits of information to a Word document for access and printing.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.

FrontPage Web DesignBeginning FrontPage users will learn the basics of creating quality, useful WebPages.  Participants will learn to create a web site using a wizard or template, as well as from scratch.  Hyperlinks, images, and more will enhance the participant’s WebPages.  Prerequisites: This is an advanced course, and participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning and Intermediate Word.  Excel knowledge would be a plus.

Beginning Access 2003 -  Learn Access basics of creating a database by determining fields and assigning data types and properties.  Learn how to enter and edit data using tables and forms, how to use queries to extract specific data from one or more tables, and how to display data using grouping levels in a report.  Also, import and export files between Access and Excel.  Prerequisites: This is an extremely advanced course used in businesses; therefore, the end-user should have Beginning Windows, Word, and Excel, at the minimum.    

Intermediate ACCESS 2003 - Learn the next steps to creating a database in Microsoft® ACCESS XP.  Learn how to create a table using the Table Wizard.  Complete a spelling check or find specific records or data in a table and replace with other data.  Find out about the Help feature.  Most importantly, learn how to do queries to extract specific data from a table.  Participants will also create calculated fields and learn to filter data in records.  Prerequisite: Participants must have had the CTCs Beginning ACCESS course.

Digital Camera / Multimedia – Learn how to use a Sony Mavica floppy disc camera.  Identify the settings for every lighting situation, the picture effects available, and the size effects of an image.  Move from floppy disc to a quick camera slide show ready for audiences to view.  Ultimately, you will learn to burn your masterpiece on a CD.  Prerequisites: Participants must have had Beginning Windows and Beginning Word.  PowerPoint knowledge would be a plus.

Digital Photo EditingUtilizing digital cameras and scanners, students will use graphics and images to create content-oriented productions.  The media used within these productions will be developed, edited, or otherwise manipulated by the students using Paint Shop Pro and Photo Album software.  Prerequisites: Participants must have experience in Windows XP and Word.  Must also have Int. Word, Desktop Publishing or PowerPoint skills.

Digital Video Editing - This is a course that combines text, graphics, sound, animation, and video delivered by computer or other electronic means.  The course focuses on the systematic design, development, and editing of effective, efficient, and appealing visual productions. Participants will use multimedia software such as Pinnacle Studio 8 DV and Visual Communicator Web to deliver the production.  Prerequisites: Participants must have a working knowledge of Windows XP and Word.  Digital Photography recommended.

Basic Troubleshooting – The first response of many people when faced with a computer problem is to call a professional to fix it.  Before taking that step, however, there are a few things that you can do which may resolve your problem.  Learn some basic troubleshooting steps for PC problems that may arise on software and hardware related issues.  Find out ways to remedy problems or search for a solution yourself, without contacting an expensive tech help guy.  Also, learn some basic maintenance for your computer to keep it working smoothly.  Prerequisites: Participants must have a working knowledge of Windows XP.
