Credit Recovery Program


Mission Statement:  It is the mission of the Calcasieu Career Center comprehensive Youth and Credit Recovery Program to intervene with at-risk and disadvantaged youth to ensure that they complete high school or obtain a GED and to ensure that these youth obtain the necessary skills for success in education and employment.

Basic Program Information for the ERC, Educational Resource Center (combined program of Credit Recovery and CTC)
The Educational Resource Center is a joint effort of Workforce Investment and the Calcasieu Parish School System in partnership with Simon Youth Foundation and the Prien Lake Mall, targeting the disadvantaged.  This ERC is only one of seventeen in the nation housed in a Simon Properties Mall.  The program has been very successful serving more than 120 students during this school year.  Thirteen students graduated at the mall.

Credit Recovery Program 
The purpose of the credit recovery program is to provide an incentive for anyone to return to the classroom after dropping out of school or to keep at-risk students in school in order to obtain a high school diploma.   

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Participant 
These participants are selected based on income eligibility requirements set by the federal government and must be between 14 and 21 years of age.  An individual service strategy identifies education and employment goals and assesses services to help the participant overcome barriers.  A service plan is designed setting the participants’ goals and objectives. Ongoing program evaluation ensures continuous improvement in services provided to participants.

Criteria for Entrance to the program is on a case by case basis.  Some considerations include the following:

  • Students can be in school, at risk of dropping out, or a returning dropout.

  • One or more years behind his/her age group in number of credits attained or in the basic skill levels in languagearts and/or math

  • Has been retained two or more years

  • Exhibits excessive absenteeism

  • Has been subject to any stage of the criminal justice process (offender)

  • Is pregnant or is parenting

  • Achieves less than a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent

  • Comes from a low socio-economic level

  • Has been expelled from school

  • Is in a grade that is age-inappropriate (i.e. fifteen in the sixth grade)

  • Has difficulty performing in a normal school environment

  • Has individual needs
