Each year I take my students on a field trip to the Coushatta Day Camp. It is a half-day camp with fun-filled activities and games students
engage in to experience the culture of the tribe. It is lots of fun and a great learning experience. The camp includes activites such as looking for arrowheads, making Indian necklaces, and eating authentic fried bread. Upon returning to school, I have my students recap the day by designing a travel brochure complete with mini reports and illustrations about what they learned at camp. This year I plan to incorporate the use of handhelds for taking notes and pictures during the excursion.

How Would You Handle It?
- by
Julie Doland,
julie.doland@cpsb.org
: The teacher in charge of Option 3 last year used Fridays to develop the student's writing skills (which are VERY limited!) by having them read a scenario about a real-life work force problem. They would read the article (it comes in a publication supplied by GED), write a short description of the problem, and then write about how they would change the problem. She said it was like pulling teeth to get them to write. I plan to let them use the handheld to take notes in Memo while they are reading and then to use Word to type up their solution. Discussion will also be used t get them to ponder other aspects/solutions to the problem.

No Life Without Adjectives
- by
Janet Doucet,
rjlks5@bellsouth.net
There is a need to provide a strong foundation in language expression and writing skills. Adjectives play a big part in this. Teaching students to use adjectives enhance their ability to describe and make story events more vivid for the reader. Teaching adjectives is a requirement of Louisiana content standards and benchmarks in Language Arts. The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program, (LEAP), in the fourth grade requires students to express themselves in written form. Being able to use adjectives will be beneficial to the students.

In the land of make believe anything can happen! Fairy Tales do make us believe just that. It also makes children use their imagination. Fairy Tales take us to many places that we wouldn't be able to visit just for fun. In this lesson the students will investigate a familiar tale like "Cinderella" or "Little Red Riding Hood" to discover the characteristics of a fairy tale. This will help students develop their imagination and writing skills by creating another version of the stories they all know.
