Overview
In this lesson, the students will focus on the merits of a video versus a book. The students will listen to and view the story Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. This book is about how one person can make the world a more beautiful place. The students will then complete an activity using Discussion. Upon completion of Discussion, the students will list ways to make the world more beautiful by using Inspiration.

Procedures
1. Introduce vocabulary for the book Miss Rumphius using powerpoint. 2. Read and discuss the book. Then watch the video Miss Rumphius on United Streaming. Discuss video. 3. The teacher will beam the students this discussion statement: The book Miss Rumphius is better than the video. The students will use the sliding scale to state their opinion about this statement. They write a rationale explaining their vote. Then they will beam their opinion to one another. 4. Discuss results. 5. Discuss how Miss Rumphius made the world a more beautiful place. Challenge the students to come up with ideas on how they could make the world more beautiful. 6. The students will work in pairs to complete an Inspiration web on the palms listing ways they could make the world more beautiful. They must give at least 5 ideas. 7. Students will sync the palms to the computer. They will open their web and display it on the presentation station. They will explain their ideas to the class.
