Objectives
TLW:
1. Apply for passports.
2. Research the criteria needed in the countries of the region assigned that require VISAs.
3.Prepare a travel journal for each country they visit on their cyberspace/Palm tour.
4. Use the five themes of geography for each country traveled.
5. Use LEAP vocabulary terms in their journaling.

Procedures
Day 1


1. Install GoKnow CD to PC. Go to FlingIt icon and click on FlingIt to confirm website. Download website from FlingIt on PC to Palm. Beam info to students.

2. Students will fill out, sign, and apply for a passport wsing the internet websites: http://www.state.gov/www/services.html; http://travel.state.gov/downloadapplications.html; http://www.state.gov/. A passport is required when traveling to other countries.

3. Students will work in cooperative groups to research countries in their assigned region where VISAs are needed. Using GoKnow/FlingIt from PC to Palm beam the information from the following websites: http://www.state.gov/wwwservices.html; http://www.passportsandvisas.com/enhanced.html. VISAs are required to enter some countries. Using FreeWrite students will list all criteria needed to obtain VISAs and share and compare by beaming to other groups.


Day 2


1. Working in cooperative groups, students will check various climate and topographical maps of their region to see what clothing and other necessary items they will need for their trek. (Note: LEAP vocabulary is used throughout all research.) Using GoKnow/FlingIt from PC to Palms to download information from the following websites: http://www.looksmart.com; http://www.nationalgeographic.com/maps/atlas/(insert continent)/ (insert country).

2. Students will compile a travel supply list using FreeWrite that will include clothing, health, and beauty supplies, and extra accessories that will be brought along on their trip. (Note: In many areas, certain clothing is not worn because of certain religious customs and other precautions. It would be wise to follow these precautions.) Students would use GoKnow/FlingIt from the PC to Palms to download travel warnings at http://travel.state.gov/travelwarnings.html and beam to other groups. It would be wise to also research and download crime information, safety, and security using GoKnow/ FlingIt from the site http://www.access.gpo.gov.sudocs. Using FreeWrite document findings share/beam to other groups. Include in research any medical facilities, medical insurance, center for disease control, traffic safety and road conditions, custom restrictions,and criminal penaities which can be found at http://www.cdc.gov download/beam using GoKnow/FlingIt. Share /beam this information using FreeWrite to other groups.


Day 3 and 4


1. Students will prepare a travel journal for each country visited in their assigned region. Using FreeWrite the journal should consist of one or more paragraphs describing the geographic area, their likes and dislikes about the area, people they met and their customs, wildlife etc. The students may also include information about what they have seen, done, and learned. Accuracy counts! Students will choose three of the following options to be included in their journals using GoKnow/FlingIt, FreeWrite, TealPaint, QuickChart, Britannica Concise Encyclopedia 2005 HH Ed.:

a) Read and summarize a myth or legend at http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/aoi/opps/spin/trave01.html.

b) Using QuickChart create a colorful chart of the endangered species of your community using site: http://www.kent.wednet.edu/curriculum/socstudies/(insert country)/(insert continent)project/endangered.html or Britannica HH Ed.

c)Using Britannica HH ED.research information on a famous (insert country) leader and write a short biography of the person's life or any other leader of importance to the country.

d) Locate a current event story from a newspaper or magazine. Read this article and find where it occured and using FreeWrite explain in their own words what the story is about.using GoKnow/FlingIt the students may download current newspaper articles from the following websites: http://www.the advocate.com; http://wire.ap.org as well as a list of state newspapers throughout the U.S. Magagines online are located at http://www.bellsouth.net/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/AppLogic+SearchPageAppLogic; TIME.comhomepage/timemagazine; http://www.usnews.com/usnews/home.htm(U.S.NewsMagazine).

e) Find several recipes from your country. Using FreeWrite explain how the food is prepared, served, and later and what ingredients are used at using GoKnow/FlingIt download information at http://soar.Berkley.EDU/recipes/ethnic/(insert country)/indexall.htm.

f) Using TealPaint create a colorful drawing of a cultural or physical feature of your country. Use only authentic colors and using FreeWrite explain what the feature represents and why it is important in that country's culture.

g) Using Britannica HH ED. or GoKnow/FlingIt to download information at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ research a particular ethnic group in your country and using FreeWrite explain their traditional ways of living and how they are different from ways of American culture.

h) Using Britannica HH ED. choose an important crop in your country and explain how it is grown. Using TealPaint draw a colorful illustration to include in the description Using GoKnow/FlingIt download information form http://www.nationalfeographic.comNationalGeographismagazine.

i) Research your country's art using FreeWrite expalin how it is different from American art. Using GoKnow/FlingIt download information from http://www.kentwednet.edu/curriculum/socstudies/(insert country)/(insert continent) project/art.html.

j) Using FreeWrite write a story using as much of a language used in your country as possible. Using GoKnow?FlingIt download information from the language charts found at http://www.kent.wednet.edu/curriculum/socstudies/(insert countr)/(insert language).html.


3. Print out journal using Palm and PrintBoy document.


Day 5

1. Working in groups, the students will prepare a budget for their country's trek. Using Quicksheet the students will make a spread sheet on their budget for their trip. They will include date, expeditures, deposit, items purchased, and any balance. They may use Palm calculators to compute this budget. They are to compare budgets/balancesat he end of their journal with other groups by beaming.

2. Print out spreadsheets using Palm and PrintBoy document.
