Wanted Dead or Alive: Viruses that Cause Disease

Overview
Students will research viruses that cause disease in humans and create fact slides that will be added to class presentation. This is one of three lessons in which students explore agents that cause disease in humans. The others are genetic illnesses and bacterial diseases. Assume that students have sufficient skills to complete this lesson.

• PowerPoint or Sketchy
• Printboy (or similar)

Technology
• Handheld with voice recorder
• Margi presenter or document camera
• Printer

Objectives
• research facts on a virus that causes diseases in humans
• create a slide presentation that give the information about the virus
• share information with class

Procedures
The teacher will:
1. Introduce the lesson using Cooties2 to illustrate how easily illnesses are spread in humans.
2. Present background information on viruses such as general characteristics, life cycles, transmission to humans, etc. Teacher should want to use Inspiration to present these concepts.
3. Use class notes and text to brainstorm with Inspiration, the handheld, and a presentation device the names of viruses that cause illnesses in humans.
4. Using results from brainstorming, allow students to draw virus names from a box. Depending on class size, teacher may direct students may work in pairs.
5. Direct students to use text, Gale databases, Worldbook Online, and other library materials to gather information. Students will use Viral Diseases research document to gather information. Research document will include required facts and citations. This doc should be beamed to students.
6. Direct students to compile research results using Sketchy or PowerPoint. Depending on class size, the teacher may choose to limit the number of slides per presentation. Students should include illustration, life cycle, transmission, symptoms, affected body systems, and possible treatment.
7. Using the theme, “Wanted Dead or Alive,” compile a single presentation which will be presented to class and beamed to all students. For the master presentation, create an opening slide titles, “ Wanted: Dead or Alive!”
8. Assess student work using rubric.
9. Finally, extend the lesson by discussing or requiring information on the dangers of storing viruses in today’s world.
