Prepare and gather data to create a bar/pie graph

Procedures
Prior: The teacher will have typed pg 114/115 into a word document and synced it to the handheld. Also, the teacher will have prepared a memo for “Name Picker”. In memo, there will be 17 entries. The entries will correspond to the questions. In the workbook there are 14 questions. 5 literal questions,54 inferential questions, and 4 Making Connections questions. In memo, #1 will be L1, #2=L2, #3=L3 and so on ending with MC4
1. Students will come in, check out their handheld, make sure it is charged.
2. As a class the students will be shown a transparency of pictures. They must figure out what we will begin studying today. They will be shown a light bulb, ocean waves, electricity, and drum. They will be given the clues: It travels in waves, it is a form of energy, it can be changed into heat, it can be reflected. Students must determine what we will be studying.
3. Students will complete a concept map on everything they can think of to do with light.
4. Assignment written on the board: “Table Captains, come see me so you can be beamed.” Captains will come to teacher, she/he will beam the document from Docs to Go to the captain. Captains will in turn beam the document to others at the table.
5. Students will read the 2 page document on Light Energy.
6. Students will go to the desk, have the teacher open Name Picker, student will have the computer pick a question for them to complete. Once they get their question, they will go to the board where the questions will be written out on index cards and taped BACKWARDS to the board with their id on the backside (L1, L2 etc)
7. Once everyone has finished, the teacher will connect the handhelds one by one to the projector. The student will read his/her question and answer the question. The students will comment on the answer in a reinforcing manner or possibly make corrections. Table Captain will then go into memo. Create a file entitled
“ Student’s name, comments. Table Captain will start the comments by making his/her comments, pass his handheld to the next person and let them continue. Sort of like Story Starter. (Rules beforehand must be given on the fact that ONLY positive comments can be made. EVEN WHEN DOING CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. )
8. Table captain will then beam memo file to presenter. Presenter should receive 6 beams of 4 comments each.
Exploration and Extension:
Make a count of all light sources in the home by room accounting. Students will graph their light sources using Excel for extra credit.
