Overview
This activity can be used by students to practice converting mixed numbers to fractions or vice versa. The activity could be used whole class (if every student has a handheld), in groups, or as a center activity as a culmination to a unit on mixed numbers. Students will need to have mastered multiplication, division, and simplifying fractions in order to be successful with this activity.

United Streaming Video - The Zany World of Basic Math, Module 9: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions (clip on Mixed Numbers)
Objectives
The learner will: •Select and discuss the correct operation for a given problem involving positive fractions using appropriate language, such as sum, difference, numerator, and denominator (N-4-M) (N-5-M) •Read, explain, and write a numerical representation for positive improper fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals from a pictorial representation and vice versa (N-3-M)
Procedures
1.View the United Streaming video clip Mixed Numbers which is part of “The Zany World of Basic Math, Module 9: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions to review converting fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. 2.Students write steps to converting fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to fractions in Memo. Check for accuracy. 3.Students will use the application Mixed Up to practice conversions (they may use paper and pencil if necessary) a.First – convert 10 mixed numbers to fractions with a denominator up to 10 at the beginner level. Record scores. b.Second – convert 10 fractions with a denominator up to 10 to mixed numbers at the beginner level. Record scores. c.Repeat steps a and b above at the advanced level.
