Objectives
The learner will •Analyze arguments. •Use the concept of logical argument as a strategy to produce desired outcomes. •Use technology to collaborate/interact with peers. •Use technology to communicate and present ideas. •Use technology for problem solving. •Use technology to enhance learning. •Use technology to evaluate ideas.
Procedures
1.Teacher will set Discussion preferences by developing a statement that requires a level of agreement or disagreement and rationale for position. Example: Cell phone use should be allowed in school. 2.Teacher will beam preference to students. 3.Teacher will distribute instructions for using Discussion if first time use. 4.Students will open Discussion and respond to prompt. 5.Students will “meet” with peers. 6.Using memo, students will write final opinion and rationale and beam to teacher for use in follow-up lessons.(Follow up lessons will relate to using the information with the Yes, but argument strategy.) 7. Teacher will elicit/post responses: Did your opinion change during the course of the "Discussion"? How? Why? 7. Teacher will elicit definitions for logical argument and emotional argument. 8. Students will classify rationales used in today's "Discussion" as logical or emotional. 9. Teacher will elicit responses: What type of argument seems more powerful in producing change? Why?
