Overview
Earlier in the year, students studied team sports and related vocabulary as well as summer sports and related vocabulary. This lesson is a culminating activity following the unit on winter sports. Students have assigned groups and assigned numbers within that group. They are experienced at beaming and syncing and are familiar with the Handheld applications Memos, Sketchy, and Voice Memo.

Software
Sketchy, Memos, and Voice Memo for the Handheld

Technology
PalmOne for the PCTextbook
Notebook
Spanish-English Dictionary
Smartboard
MS Word: activity instructions, student guides for Sketchy, Memos, and Voice Memo

Objectives
The learner will
1) develop and ask questions about sports.
2) analyze information about sports.
3) create an illustration of a sport.

Procedures
(Students pick up palms as they come in the room. Guides for the applications we use are available near the handheld charging center.)
1. Teacher reviews vocabulary from the unit using posters, transparencies, objects, etc.
2. Teacher explains that students will be using vocabulary from this chapter and previous chapters to conduct interviews. She explains that students will draw a sport from the hat and keep that sport a secret.
3. Teacher passes out written instructions to students and goes through directions for assigned groups.
4. Students draw a sport from a hat.
5. Students develop questions and beam to one another.
6. Students create illustration.
7. Using concentric circles, students interview each other and guess the sport being described. (Round 1)
8. Students beam illustrations to one another and ask questions about them. (Round 2)

If time permits:
Teacher shows student illustrations and asks questions (individual and choral) using a student’s Palm and a Smartboard.

9. Students Hotsync interviews to the classroom computer. Save in the file intrevistas-deportes.

Here is a copy of the student instruction sheet in case I have not loaded it properly under the Other Supporting Materials section:

¿Qué deporte es? Nombre: ________________________________
Fecha: _________________________________

In assigned groups,
1. Using the application Memos on your PalmZire, develop questions in Spanish that can be used to guess what sport a person plays. Each group must develop at least 2 questions for your assigned category and type them into each members handheld. Use correct grammar, syntax, and punctuation.

*If you finish before time is called, practice answering your questions with a partner from your group.

Name your document the following (IN SPANISH)
Group 1 – weather/ season etc. Ex: In what season/s do you play the sport?
Group 2 – equipment/playing surface, etc. Ex: Do you need a skating rink?
Group 3 – number of players/time periods Ex: How many time periods are there?
Group 4 – gender of players/popularity Ex: In what countries is it popular?
Group 5 – rules/ways to score Ex: How do you score?

2. When I tell you, the number one person from each group will beam his or her questions to the other groups moving in a counter-clockwise direction. Seated group members beam the questions to one another as you receive them. When #1 returns, group mates beam him the questions.

3. Each group should review and make corrections to the questions they have received.

4. Using Sketchy (Name: sport), draw an illustration of your sport. When you finish, practice answering the questions with a partner from your group.

In concentric circles,
Round 1 – The person answering will record interviews using Voice Memo.
1. Outer circle – asks questions. Inner circles – answer.
*Show the picture as a last resort if your partner cannot guess your sport.
2. Switch roles upon my command.

Round 2
3. Inner circle – Beam your partner your illustration and ask him questions about it in Spanish. Ex: ¿Qué es? ¿Dónde juegas el deporte?
4. Switch roles upon my command.
