Software
Sketchy,Teal Paint,Kid Pix, or any drawing software Memos, Word to Go, or any writing software
Technology
printer, keyboard
Objectives
1. TLW create a geometric alien using Sketchy. 2. TLW write a descriptive paragraph about their alien in Word to Go. 4. TLW try to draw another alien to match their partner's alien.(Reading and following directions.) 5. TLW compare pictures.
Procedures
1. TTW review common geometric shapes: square, triangle, diamond, rectangle, oval, circle, heart, line. 2. TTW explain that TLW be drawing an alien from outer space using the geometric shapes, also explaining that this is make-believe and fun. **This is a great creative writing idea for a space unit or can be adapted to Halloween with monsters. 3. The teacher can model a picture previously drawn. 4. TTW ask students to open Sketchy and create their own alien titled _______'s Alien.(previous introduction to software will be necessary). 5. TLW then be directed to print the alien. 6. After the alien is printed, each child is to open Memos and hit New. 7. TLW title the memo _________'s Alien. 8. TLW then write a paragraph describing the alien using numbers, colors, sizes, and shapes. 9. TLW print the paragraph. 10. Depending on the amount of time and detail you want to give you can incorporate editing and corrections or just use the original paragraph to continue. The hard copies can be used for grading purposes and portfolios. 11. TLW be given a partner. They are to beam each other's alien paragraph or they can use the hard copy (This may be easier for younger students so that they do not have to continously switch between Sketchy and Memos.) 12. TLW open Sketchy to new and title Partner's Alien. 13. TLW use the paragraph to draw the alien. 14. TLW print the alien picture. 15. When complete, the partners are to compare the original aliens. 16. The pictures with the descriptions can be displayed so all can compare. 17. A different twist is to do steps 1-10 and make a bulletin board having the students try to match the Aliens by description. 18. For a group writing activity, choose a few aliens and have a student start a story, then pass it to the next person, and they can continue the story. Each group can read their story to the class.
