Overview
This unit of study was designed as a collaborative distance project between NBCT EMC visual art specialists Judy Ball Johnson, Highlands Magnet Elementary School, Shreveport, LA, Email Address- jbjart@sport.rr.com or jbjohnson@caddo.k12.la.us, and by Bobbi Yancey, College Oaks Elementary, Lake Charles, LA. byanci@cox-internet.com or bobbi.yancey@cpsb.org Students will be introduced to an artist, Clementine Hunter, who worked as a cook, sharecropper, domestic, and nanny her entire life in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, mainly at Melrose Plantation. Students will investigate her genre paintings to analyze daily life depicted and how it compares and differs with daily living of today. Additionally, students will compare and contrast “Folk Life” in North and South Louisiana. Students will explore cultural heritage, diversity, and use of found objects to develop a theme reflecting their personal heritage in the creation of their own original art work in a “Folk”, “Primitive”, or “Outsider” style. Students will submit work electronically using Palm HandHeld computers and in a traditional manner using a variety of media on an Artist Trading Card template. The project will culminate with students meeting each other on the grounds of Melrose Plantation. Students will tour “The African House” to view Hunter’s murals first hand, will see a theatrical portrayal of Clementine Hunter by Louisiana thespian, Carol Ann Gayle, will view an electronic student art exhibit, and will participate in an information handheld beam-a-thon, and a Artist Trading Card Exchange.

Procedures
1. Class will discuss distance learning project on Clementine Hunter.
2. Students will view a teacher made PowerPoint presentation and additional resources on Folk life and Clementine Hunter to learn of her life and genre paintings.
3. Students will use a glossary in Word to Go that has been beamed to all handhelds to learn the meaning of vocabulary associated with Folk Life, Folk Art, Primitive Art, Outsider Art.
4. Student will be divided into teams of 2, 3, or 4 to use handhelds to explore Clementine websites and works using Flingit. The site will be two layers deep.
5. Working in teams, students will use Memo to create a list of themes and characteristics in Clementine’s works showing her daily life. They will then create a list of themes in their daily life using Memos. A Venn Diagram or Thinking Map (Bubble Map) drawn in Note Pad will be used to illustrate the results of the assignment.
6. Working in their teams, students will create a graphic organizer using Inspiration on their handhelds to make a chart of characteristics seen in Clementine’s work. They will print these, using Print Boy.
7. Students will use these characteristics to create a 2 ½” X 3 ½” ATC in Sketchy or Teal Paint for a distant learning friend that will be emailed in JPEG form to the art teachers’ e-mail accounts. The actual cards will be exchange with each student on a field trip in December.
8. Student teams will interview an older person about traditions in there everyday life. Each student will ask a question using the voice recorder on the Palm.
9. Students will take a picture of their interviewee.
10. Students will beam or synch the information to desktop computer or teacher’s Palm daily.
11. Student teams will make a slide in PowerPoint of their interview data using the desktop computer. They will use Sketchy/Teal Paint to create artwork to illustrate their data and transfer it to a PPT slide (each team member creates an illustration based on their part of the interview).
12. Student groups will collaborate to create animations from the interview sketches they created using Sketchy software. Art and technology needs for animation frames will be determined by teachers according to teacher generated rubric/assessment. The last frame must contain student’s name.
13. Use the Internet and other resources to collectively explore similarities and differences in “Folk Life” between North Louisiana and South Louisiana creating a classroom visual record of same.

14. Hands-on field experience for students from Shreveport and Lake Charles will be accomplished through an educational tour of Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches, LA.

15. TV/laptop/handheld will be taken on fieldtrip to allow students to see the North and South Louisiana student presentations about Clementine Hunter.

16. Students will also share their artistic interpretations of 20th and 21st century Folk Life of North Louisiana and South Louisiana based on their interviews and their own personal experience. Student teams will beam their information to their long distance friends so they will have each other’s art and information on their handhelds.

17. Students from North and South Louisiana will participate in an Artist Trading Card exchange.

18. Assessment will be an authentic assessment which is project based.
