Overview
Students will read lines from the epic Beowulf and identify descrptive phrases that detail the appearance of Grendel and contrast that with their own traditional ideas of evil.

Objectives
Read literature of the Anglo-Saxon period on the subject of heroes and villains Read and interpret an epic poem Apply a variety of reading strategies including using context clues Respond to literature in a variety of modes
Procedures
ü Read lines 16-21 in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf. ü Identify and write in Note Pad the phrases used to describe Grendel in lines 16-21. ü Use Rapid Fire to illustrate the descriptions by writing the word Grendel in the center and list key words or phrases that best describe Grendel. ü Using memo, list modern phrases that relate to our own traditional ideas of evil. ü Beam Rapid Fire and memo to the teacher. ü Locate Sketchy and be brave by drawing a picture of Grendel from the descriptive details in your note pad. Share the picture and descriptions of Grendel by beaming it to the person across the table from you. ü A hard copy of the assignment will be graded and returned to the student.
