Overview
: The teacher in charge of Option 3 last year used Fridays to develop the student's writing skills (which are VERY limited!) by having them read a scenario about a real-life work force problem. They would read the article (it comes in a publication supplied by GED), write a short description of the problem, and then write about how they would change the problem. She said it was like pulling teeth to get them to write. I plan to let them use the handheld to take notes in Memo while they are reading and then to use Word to type up their solution. Discussion will also be used t get them to ponder other aspects/solutions to the problem.
Software
*Handheld computer with the following installed: -Memo -Microsoft Word -Discussion
Technology
*GED publications of workforce problems
Objectives
The learner will: 1) read the scenario and use Memo to identify problem(s) in the work situation, 2) use Word to write a short summary of problems and their solution(s), 3) beam their work to a neighbor and to me, 4) use Discussion to further investigate problems and solutions in scenario.
Procedures
The students will be given the publication and will read the problem. They will use their handhelds to take notes in Memo while they are reading. After they have finished, they will type a short paragraph in Word stating the problem, their solution and anything else they feel would be useful. They will then beam their work to a neighbor and discuss each other’s solutions. I will have them beam their work to me so that I can print a hard copy and give them a grade for content and participation. We will also use Discussion to address the issues appearing in that day’s problem.
