Overview
The lesson is designed to help students become familiar with the variety of information resources available in the library. This lesson is great for helping students improve scores on the “Using Information Resources” section of the GEE 21 and the IOWA Tests, and it should be given prior to testing. It may also be used during freshmen orientation in the library.

Software
Word to Go (Handheld)

Technology
1. OPAC by Follett (Automated card catalog)
2. Reference books (almanacs, atlases, quotation books, etc.)
3. "Reference Adventure" sheets with different questions requiring the use of a variety of types of library reference books to locate answers.
4. Answer keys to "Reference Adventure" sheets

Objectives
The learner will:
1. Use OPAC to locate appropriate reference books in the library to find the answers to the scavenger hunt questions on the handheld.
2. Use the book's index, table of contents, maps, charts, graphs, and guide words to find answers to the questions
3. Use handhelds to record the correct answers and page numbers in “Word to Go”.

Procedures
1. Students will be assigned to teams.
2. Each member of the same team will be beamed a “Reference Adventure” sheet with ten identical questions in "Word to Go". Different teams will have different "Reference Adventures" with a different set of questions (Adventure #1, Adventure #2, etc.) Each adventure will require the use of various library reference books—-atlases, almanacs, quotation books, etc.
3. Team members will use the OPAC program on the library student search terminals to find the call numbers and the titles for the books which they feel will best provide the answers. Students will write the call numbers and titles of the books on the handhelds. (Note: If the library only has five or six search terminals, the librarian may want to provide the book titles and call numbers so that students do not become frustrated while waiting for a computer.)
4. Students will locate the book on the shelf and use the index, table of contents, guide words, maps, charts, and graphs to find the answer to the questions.
5. Students will record in “Word to Go” the answer and the page number on which the answer was located. If the page number is not given for an answer, no credit will be given for that answer.
6. Keys will be provided for students to check their answers at the completion of the scavenger hunt.
