Principals, Tech Contacts, and School Employees:
Please remember every student and employee in the Calcasieu Parish School System must have a copy of the district's current Acceptable Use Policy (
AUP) on file.  Student's AUPs should be on file in their cumulative record folders.  Employee AUPs should be on file in their personnel folders in the principal's office.  Any student that does not have a signed AUP may not have access to any Internet Capable computer.  Students and employees do not have to sign a new AUP each year.  Teachers please check to make sure each student has the most current version of the adopted AUP on file.  The current CPSB AUP may be found at:

GRANT
AWARDED
Dolby Elementary was awarded an 8g grant totaling $98,330 for implementation of "Cultural Connections." In this project each second, third, fourth, and fifth grade classroom will be equipped with five multimedia computers connected to the Internet, printer, scanner, software, digital camera, and all the materials necessary to improve student writing skills and raise academic achievement. Teachers received two days of initial training from Tech Center staff on August 8 and 9 and will receive ongoing professional development throughout the year.

Thought for the Week
Using technology is like eating ice cream. Two scoops add a "double dip" of interest. Taking one lick at a time prevents brain "freeze." And the end result is a tummy-full of special memories.

Tip of the Week
When integrating technology into the curriculum, it is important that the teacher model the behavior that is expected and that he/she provide a model (sample project) to be emulated. Two models are better than none.

ThinkQuest
Congratulations to Felicia Coleman for being selected as one of two Louisiana ThinkQuest fellows.  As part of the competitive process, Ms. Coleman was required to write a technology-integrated lesson that demonstrated the use of critical thinking skills, problem-solving strategies, and project oriented instructional delivery.  The lesson entitled, "The Power is in the Genes," focused on the creation and comparison of frequency tables and Internet research that could be applied within a PowerPoint presentation or webpage layout.  As part of the winnings, the Bell South Foundation has agreed to provide an all-expense paid trip to the National ThinkQuest Conference to be held in November 2000 in Cairo, Egypt.  Upon her return, Mrs. Coleman will work with the Louisiana Center for Educational Technology in promoting and encouraging teachers across the state to incorporate ThinkQuest in their own classroom environments. Money and prizes can be won by both the teacher and students who compete.  Those interested in ThinkQuest, please contact Felicia Coleman or call 491-1706 for more details.
