Thought for the Week
Ultimately, the only power to which man should aspire is that which he exercises over himself.
-- Elie Wiesel

September 11 Anniversary
With the anniversary of the tragedy on September 11, 2001 rapidly approaching the Family and Work Institute received a grant from the Bank One Foundation to develop an educational web site for educators to use in helping students understand this event in our nation's history. Entitled "9/11 As History", the site is a multidimensional program and resource for all teachers (all grade levels), students, and parents. The Families and Work Institute (FWI) has developed 16 web-based lessons commemorating the events of September 11, 2001.  Curricula topics cover safety and fear, interaction with others, empathy skills, heroes, reflective processing and resiliency, diversity and compassion, values, social and civic action, understanding current events and media awareness, and history and international studies.  Materials include a reading list for students and adults, web-based student writing exercises, and other online resources.  To view this resource visit http://www.911AsHistory.org

Email Scams
Some of you may have read the series of articles published in the Lake Charles American Press regarding an email scam. The help desk has numerous reports of this very same email being sent to CPSB email accounts. The subject line on this email is "REQUEST FOR BUSINESS ASSISTANCE." Please remember that if you get any email from people you don't know or that seem strange, just delete them. You can also use the Organize option in Outlook to "filter" your email as was outlined in last weeks Tech Connect.
Windows 2000/XP Key Codes
New computers that have Windows 2000 or Windows XP have the key code for these products on a colorful label stuck to the side or top of the computer. A list of the Dell service number, the CPSB tag number, and the corresponding Key Code should be kept by the user and the school. This is required if the computer needs to have the system restored for any reason.

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers

Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 78 infected computers out of a total of 1798 OfficeScan clients.  (Please note that one computer was responsible for all of the “Nimda” virus incidents reported.)

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.
