Thought for the Week
"The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards."
-- Anatole France

Tech Support Help Desk Update
During the week of 8/15/2004 the CPSB Help Desk received 465 help requests sent into tech.help@cpsb.org. Of these issues, the Tech Support staff was able to close 375 for an 81% resolution rate for the week. Please see the graph of the week’s statistics below. Of course these numbers do not include the phone or walk-in help requests handled during this same time period, only email.

Of note is that on 8/18/2004 we received 110 requests in one day which set a new one day record for the department. In fact, we have received in one week more help requests that we usually get in a month. If you have submitted an issue to tech.help, we ask for your patience as we are getting to all the ongoing help requests as fast as we can.

Using Office Scan Virus Log
Do you really have the virus that pops up on your screen or not? Office scan will always let you know if your computer has a virus by displaying a "pop-up" message.  Office Scan may have deleted the virus or it may still be on your computer. The message usually seen is “unable to perform the delete action…” but you can not see the rest of the message. If you encounter this issue, read the "Checking OfficeScan Virus Log" handout.  This handout explains how to read your virus logs.  The handout can be found at:  http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/tech_help/guides/OfficeScan/Checking_OfficeScan_Virus_Log.pdf

Create Forms for Easier Data Entry
Entering a large amount of data into an Excel spreadsheet can be very time consuming. Using data entry forms makes this task easier. A data entry form is a dialog box that gives you a convenient way to enter a complete row of information at one time.  To use a data entry form to edit a list:
  • Click a cell in the labeled row you want to add the record to.
  • On the Data menu, click Form.
  • Click OK. A data entry dialog box appears, with field labels that correspond with the column labels in your list.

To add a new record

  • Click New.
  • Type the information for the new record.
  • When you finish typing data, press the ENTER key to add the record.
  • When you finish adding records, click Close to add the new record and close the data form.

Top Ten Viruses Found on CPSB Computers
Here are the top ten viruses found on CPSB computers in the past 7 days. The stats are based on 720 infected computers out of a total of 8371 OfficeScan clients.

The latest OfficeScan pattern as of 8-25-2004 is pattern 2.162.00. Please check your pattern by placing your cursor over the OfficeScan icon and viewing the pop-up window that appears. If your pattern is significantly different than this, please email tech.help@cpsb.org regarding this or any other question you have regarding OfficeScan.

The information shows the name of the virus, the number of infected files found, and the percentage of the virus from the total.  ALL school board employees need to ensure that their Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM or other PC classroom computers stay virus free. Go to the following link to download the district copy of OfficeScan: http://teacherlink.cpsb.org/officescan and your computer will automatically be updated daily to scan for the latest viruses. You must install the software using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later (Netscape will not work!!!!!) Please answer "Yes" to all prompts as the software installs. If you have any questions, please contact the CPSB Help Desk at tech.help@cpsb.org.
