AA (Arts) BA (French Studies) CPLF (Certificat Pratique de Langue Française) M.Ed. (Secondary Education with a minor in French)

Mr. James Paul Halphen

I received a Master's Degree in Secondary Education with a minor in French Literature from the University of Louisiana Lafayette in May of 1994.  My undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts and an Associate of Arts from the American University in Paris France and a CPLF (Certificat Pratique de Langue Francaise) from L'Universite de Paris Sorbonne Paris IV, were awarded to me in June of 1987.

I started my career in education as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisiana Lafayette and then taught one year at Catholic High School in New Iberia, Louisiana before transferring to Lafayette Parish Schools where I taught Bilingual Education at Carencro Middle School for 13 years and then served as an Instructional Technology Trainer at the school board for 2 years.  During my term in Lafayette Parish, I also worked as a part time travel agent due to my extensive knowledge of Europe and the Caribbean.  In 2000, I decided to take time off from teaching and work full time as a staff development trainer at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, LA and also continued to work part time in the travel industry.

After 3 years as a staff development trainer, I decided to go full time into the travel industry.  I purchased GlobeTrek Travel, Inc. (a Lake Charles, LA based travel agency) in 2006.  I am still President and CEO of GlobeTrek Travel, Inc. today and continue to work in the office in the afternoons. I decided to return to education in 2014 when I accepted a teaching position with the Calcasieu Parish School board as an Itinerant Elementary French Teacher at St. John Elementary and LeBleu Settlement Elementary teaching 4th and 5th grade French.

The following year, it was with great excitement that I had accepted the position as a foreign language instructor for the University Program at LaGrange High and Washington Marion High.  Due to family medical issues, I resigned in March of 2017 to move back to Lafayette, LA in order to be closer to my family.

After my mother passed in August of 2017,  I decided to go back full-time into the classroom and I was offered the position at S J Welsh teaching French Immersion Science.  I enjoyed working with such gifted students.  In 2019 I transferred to F. K. White Middle School where I taught French as a second language until May of 2022.

My family moved to Shreveport in July of 2022.  I accepted a teaching position at Northwood High School in North Shreveport/Blanchard, LA teaching Spanish I and Spanish II.  We moved back to Lake Charles, LA in May of 2023 and I am very excited to start the 2023-2024 year as a Barbe High School Buccaneer!
