    DeQuincy High School Scholarship Checklist 

    A checklist will be given to each student turning in  scholarships to Mrs. Marcantel.  Please bring scholarship applications and documentation required for the scholarship. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.  A checklist must be completed and signed by the student and guidance office to be completed.

     

    Harry Hooker Sr. Memorial Scholarship

     

    Harry L. Hooker Sr. was known by many people as a family man, a loving husband.
    dedicated father to four children, and a remarkable grandfather to three grandsons.
    Affectionately known to some as Colonel Hooker, he worked for over thirty years in the
    Louisiana Dept. of Corrections and as a part-time officer with the City of DeQuincy Police.
    Colonel Hooker served as a musician, leader of the Royal Knights, geared to mentor the
    youth of DeQuincy. He became an Elder in 2007, ordained in the Church of God In Christ.
    Mr. Hooker served the city of DeQuincy with love and compassion and was known by
    family and friends as an avid fisherman with a glorious personality and lived life to the
    fullest. After his untimely passing in 2009, the family decided to keep his legacy alive by
    awarding scholarships to Dequincy High graduates. He strongly believed that attaining a higher education
    was the key to a better life and encouraged all he could to do so.

    ELIGIBILITY
    1. The applicant must be a senior graduate from DeQuincy High School.
    2. The applicant must attend an accredited college, university, or technical school.
    Upon graduating from high school,
    3. The applicant must have a GPA of 2.5 (minimum).
    REQUIREMENTS
    1. Applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2024. 
    2. All information must be completed by the applicant's school representative,
    and/or parent / legal guardian per instructions.
    3. Required documents must accompany the application.
    4. Incomplete information will render the application void.
    5. The essays must be 1 typed page and completed by the applicant.

    NAACP Freedom Scholarship

    The purpose of this scholarship is to provide a one-time , non-renewable award of $1000 to 2 high school seniors who will be attending their first year of college. 

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    Applicant must: 

    1. Be a US citizen
    2. Be a graduating high school senior of a Calcasieu Parish School. 
    3. Have a minimum of 2.0 GPA
    4.  Attend an accredited private/public 4-year college, 2 year college, community college, trade school, or other public educational institution AND enrolled for at least 12 semester hours in the Fall following graduation.
    5. Submit a copy of a high school transcript and ACT scores
    6. Complete and submit an essay on one of 2 listed topics
    7. Include 2 letters of recommendation from a school official and personal reference
    8. Submit a completed application by the postmark deadline

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Applications are reviewed and scored by the scholarship committee, who are volunteers that read and review applications and documents provided. If selected, you will be notified by mail to the address you provide. Decisions of the selection committee are final and cannot be appealed.

    Hagan Scholarship 

    The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship worth up to $6000 each semester.

    Eligibility Requirements
    1. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
    2. Must attend DeQuincy High School. 
    3. Must have achieved a 3.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average.
    4. Must enroll at an Eligible Four-Year College or University the first semester following high school graduation.
    5. Must maintain a four year or less graduation schedule in college.
    6. Must work 240 hours each year, from January 1 until commencement of the fall semester in college. Employment must be regularly scheduled work performed under supervision for compensation.
    7. Applicant’s Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for Federal Income Tax Purposes must not exceed $100,000 for the 2022 tax year.

    The intended recipient of a Hagan Scholarship is a high-achieving, goal-driven student having a genuine financial need in order to attend college.

    John J. Johnson II Memorial Scholarship

    23-24 John J. Johnson Memorial Scholarship application

     

    National Association of University Women 

     

    The Lake Charles Branch of the National Association of University Women is accepting applications from high school seniors who wish to apply for our annual $1,500.00 ($750.00 per semester-maximum of two semesters) scholarship.  This $1,500.00 scholarship will be given to an African American female student.  Please have three of your high school seniors who wish to apply for the scholarship to complete the necessary forms.  Please consider students with financial needs.  The application forms are enclosed for your convenience.  The scholarship is to be offered this spring.

     

    The following guidelines are for your consideration:

     

    • The applicant must have high moral standards.
    • The applicant must have a 2.5 grade point average or better.
    • The applicant must have participated in extracurricular activities.
    • The applicant must have shown a low percentage of absences and good conduct.
    • The applicant must submit a photograph with the application.
    • The applicant must submit a 150-word auto-biography with the application.
    • The applicant must submit verification of ACT scores.
    • The applicant must submit at least two letters of recommendation (one from parent and one from a school official, a member of the clergy or an organizational sponsor).

    Kyle Andrew Broussard FCA Memorial Scholarship

    The Kyle Andrew Broussard Memorial Scholarship will be offering two $2,000 college scholarships: one for a male and one for a female. The scholarship will pay $1,000 per semester for two semesters. 

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR CANDIDACY

     

    A committed Christian, whose beliefs are in full agreement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Statement of Faith (enclosed in the packet);

    A student whose life exemplifies the ideals of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

    Entering college freshman

    An active participant in FCA programs and has played a sport in high school.

    A good student academically, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

     

    Selection of the scholarship winner is based primarily on qualities of Christian character, leadership, and love for sports ministry, rather than popularity, athletic ability, scholastic attainment, or financial need.

     

    *****If selected, the recipient should plan to attend the National Day of Prayer luncheon hosted by Profit and Loss at the Lake Charles Civic Center on Thursday, May 2 to be presented and recognized as the FCA scholarship recipient.

     

    The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient’s college before the start of the fall semester.

     

    To receive the spring semester payment to the recipient’s college, the recipient must scan / email their fall semester grades and proof of registration for the spring to ssanford@fca.org / dsanford@fca.org

     

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    The Selection Committee comprised of members of the members of the Profit and Loss board will select a recipient based on the following criteria.

     

    · Application - Each candidate must submit a completed application form along with the additional information detailed below.

    · Essay – Each candidate must also submit a 500-1000 word essay describing:

     

    1. How the student came to know Jesus Christ as his/her personal Savior;

    2. The role that Christianity plays in his/her daily life;

    3. The positive and profound impact that FCA has had on him/her.

     

    · Letter of recommendation – Each candidate must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, or minister as well as a letter from the FCA Huddle affirming their involvement in FCA during high school.

     

    · Interview – There is a possibility that multiple applicants will be deemed equally deserving of the scholarship. In this event, these students will be deemed “finalists”.

     

    The Selection Committee will then interview each finalist to decide on the scholarship recipients. Information and instructions will be communicated to each finalist at least one week prior to the interviews.

    SWLA Center for Health Services

    SWLA Center for Health Services will be offering $1000 scholarships for students pursuing a career in the healthcare field.

    Eligibility Requirements: 

    •  Graduating Senior from a high school within the SWLA  Center for Health Services service area: Acadia Parish, Allen Parish, Calcasieu Parish and Lafayette Parish. 
    • Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student in any accredited college or university and majoring in a health care field. Students must attend the Fall Semester 2024. 
    • The minimum GPA is 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. 
    • Incomplete applications will not be considered. 
    • Application will not be considered if delivered in person after 2:00 PM on Friday, March 15, 2024. 
    • All mailed applications must be postmarked by midnight March 15, 2024, to be accepted.

     Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

     

    DESCRIPTION: The Lake Charles Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a public service sorority, gives a $4000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior from its service area of Calcasieu Parish.  This scholarship will be awarded based on academic performance & community service.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be a resident of Calcasieu Parish.
    • Be a graduating senior May 2024.
    • Enter a four-year university or college as a full-time Freshman in the fall of 2024.
    • 3.0 GPA

    The following information must be submitted with the application form:

    BECI Scholarship 

    BECI offers fifteen one-year scholarships, valued at $1,500 each, to students who reside on BECI service lines.  Applications are due March 1, 2024.  The winners will be selected at the BECI Annual meeting held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, by a random drawing.   The student does not have to be present to win.  Only one application per student will be accepted to enable each student to be equally eligible for the scholarship.     The Bowie Andrepont Memorial Scholarship will be offered to a senior who meets the following criteria:

    • Applicants must enroll in a college or technical school with the intention of furthering their education.
    • A check will be present to scholarship recipients with proof of registration to college or technical school.

    Shearman Foundation Scholarship

    Criteria for Selection of Applicant:

    • A graduate senior registered to attend McNeese State University
    • School involvement; leadership qualities
    • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Financial need
    • Essay (250 words or less) entitled:  "Why I Want a College Education"
    • Enclose a copy of your most recent transcript

    This is a $2400 scholarship releasing $600/semester for two years as long as the student maintains GPA/hour requirements throughout that time.

    • Involvement in school activities

    • Honors and awards in high school

    2023-24 Shearman Foundation Scholarship

     

     

    Class of 2007

    The class of 2007 is offering a scholarship to a graduating senior who meets the following eligibility requirements:

    • Minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Applicants must enroll in a college or Technical school. 
    • Students must attach a resume including honors, school involvement, and community service.

     23-24 Class of 2007 Scholarship 

     

    Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

    The Annual MLK, Jr. Scholarship will be awarded to a Graduating Senior of DHS.  Rev. King was a minister, educator and a civil rights advocator.  This scholarship is to honor his memory in all aspects of life.  Eligibility requirements:

    • Minimum 3.5 GPA

    • Active in their local Church Youth Department, (with a letter from their Pastor)

    • Write an essay on their opinions about a current event.

    • Include a Profile sheet highlighting you and your accomplishments and your current transcript. 

    Deadline is Thursday March 28, 2024 - all information requested is due to  Mrs. Marcantel .

    DeQuincy Memorial Auxillary Scholarship

    The DeQuincy Memorial Hospital Auxiliary offers Honorary Scholarships to graduating seniors from DeQuincy High School who plan to attend a university, college or vocational school.  The scholarship will be a one-time award and will be presented at the school's Awards Program.

    Applicant must be planning to enter the Health Care Field

    1. The applicant is to be an area high school graduating senior.

    2. The scholarship will be a one-time award and will be presented in the school's Awards Program.

    3. The applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

    4. The applicant must be single.

    5. Applicants will be available for an interview with a committee.

    Applications may be printed from the file attached and returned to Mrs. Marcantel when completed.

    DeQuincy Garden Club will offer a $500 scholarship to students who exhibit financial need and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

    HS Heisman Scholarship

    This award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics (3.0 or better), participate in sports, and are involved in their community and extracurricular activities .  The first 25,000 students that complete an application will win a Wendy's Gift Card in the amount of $10 - gift cards will be mailed out in November.

    DeQuincy Federated Service League Scholarship

     The DeQuincy Federated Service League will award $500.00 scholarships to graduating Seniors of DeQuincy High School. The number of scholarships is dependent on funds raised at the Louisiana Railroad Days Festival. Along with the $500.00 scholarships, the following Memorial Scholarships will be awarded :
    • Sadie Abdalla Scholarship- $1000 to a student majoring in education
    • TJ Ratliff Scholarship- $750 to a student excelling in academics
    • Sammy Yellott Scholarship- $750 to a student who has participated in sports. 
    • Dallas Yellott Scholarship- $750- to a student who has participated in choir/band
    • Gayle Fisher Scholarship - $750 to a student who has gone above and beyond in school and community service. 

    Requirements:

    • Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • College or Technical School Plans
    • 7 Semester Transcript
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Copy of ACT or Work Keys scores
    • Completed application- incomplete applications will not be considered.

    This scholarship is in memory of Myles Dickerson, a DHS graduate of 2008, and awarded to a student attending a Technical school or University in the Fall.

    The DeQuincy Civic Club gives three different types of scholarships:

    •      Grant - for Civic Club member's children
    •       Academic ($500)- for students attending a 4-year university
    •       Vocational ($300)- for students attending a vocational school

    Jamie Cooper Scholarship

    This $250 scholarship is awarded in the memory of Jamie Cooper.  Jamie was a student at DHS where she participated in Student Council, Softball and Beta Club.  Jamie's parents, Bryan and Sister Cooper, are founders of the Jamie Cooper Foundation, which sponsors the "Take the Challenge - Buckle Up" campaign and DHS scholarships.  The "Buckle-Up" campaign has received national recognition. 

    • DHS Senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Participated in a high school sport
    • Applicants must enroll in a college, technical school, or any higher institution of learning with the intention of furthering their education.

    23-24 Jamie Cooper Memorial Scholarship Application

     

    Sheldon Sellers Scholarship

    Bob Cruikshank and the Class of 1947 have established the Sheldon E. Sellers Scholarship in memory of Mr. Sellers who passed away on January 3, 1998.  Mr. Sellers was an exemplary student, businessman, husband and father.  While at DHS, Mr. Sellers served as a leader and lived his life in a manner that depicted a perfect example of outstanding character and integrity for his classmates.  He was President of his class on more than one occasion and excelled in all sports at DHS.  The scholarship amount is $500/semester for 4 years.

    Eligibility requirements:

    • Students must have maintained at least a B average in each subject for each year of high school work and rank within the top 15 percent of the class (Must have a rank of 1 - 10 on current transcript)
    •  A student will be ineligible to receive the Sheldon E. Sellers Scholarship who, during the course of his or her high school education, has encouraged, supported, incited, aided, abetted or participated in any activities which interfered with educational programs, or disrupted the peace, harmony and tranquility of the schools attended by him or her.
    •  Must register for a minimum of 12 semester hours at a four-year fully accredited college or university.  

    Print and complete the application and return it to  Mrs. Marcantel by Thursday March 28, 2024. 

    23-24 Sheldon Sellers Scholarship Application

     

    Alma Dunham Smith Contact Club Scholarship

    The scholarship will be for a one-time amount of $500 to a graduating senior of DeQuincy High.  

    Eligibility requirements:

    • Graduating senior
    • High School average of "C" or better
    • Good Character
    • Need Financial Assistance
    • Enroll in an accredited college or vocational school in Louisiana

    Joy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship

    McNeese State University Foundation administers the Joy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship for students planning to attend McNeese.  This scholarship is available to a full-time student starting at McNeese in the Fall.

    $125/semester for 8 semesters  for a total of $1,000

    Requirements:

    • DeQuincy High School Graduate
    • Eligible for admission to McNeese State University
    • US Citizen
    • 3.0 GPA and eligible for TOPS
    • Users of the DHS Library - a recommendation letter from the librarian is required

    Please turn in your letter of recommendation from the librarian as your application to Mrs. Marcantel for this scholarship. DUE Thursday March 28, 2024. 

     

    Eastern Star Scholarship

    The Eastern Star Chapter is offering a $500.00 scholarship to a senior who is going to be attending a university or technical school in the fall of 2022.

    Chris Mueller Memorial Scholarship

    The Chris Mueller Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000.00 will be given each year to a senior member who applies and meets the following requirements. 

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Must be a member of the DHS baseball team
    • Minimum GPA 2.5
    • Attach a resume that includes your school and community activities and honors.
    • Applicants must enroll in a college or technical school with the intention of furthering their education. 
    • A check will be presented to the scholarship recipient with proof of registration to college or technical school.

    This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who exemplifies confidence, hard work , achievement, and  determination.

    DeQuincy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

    The DeQuincy Chamber of Commerce is offering a scholarship to students pursuing a degree in the business field. 

    Applicants must:

    • Complete legible application
    • Complete a one-page single-spaced essay outlining a candid personal assessment of themselves and describing what makes them best suited for their field of business. Applicants should also include their inspirations in the field of business and their future plans after college that will utilize their pursued degree. 
    • Attach an academic letter of recommendation. 

     Applications are due on or before Thursday March 28, 2024. Please turn in to Mrs. Marcantel. 

    23-24 Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Application

     

    Jacob Dietz Memorial Scholarship

    The Jacob Dietz Memorial Ssholarshipp was established in memory of Jacob Louis Dietz,  a 2010 graduate of DeQuincy High School , who passed away in June 2014. Jacob loved and participated in sports, specifically football and baseball. 

    A Jacob Dietz Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000.00 will be awarded to a deserving high school senior of DHS that participated in at least one sport during high school. The scholarship will be awarded for a specific time period of one year. The scholarship will be granted for study or training at an accredited college or technical school in Louisiana. 

    • Applicants are considered on the basis of good character, regardless of race or religion. 
    • Seriousness of purpose, willingness to work, and the ability to complete the proposed course of study or training must be demonstrated.
    • Applicant must have  a 2.0 GPA or better
    • Must be enrolled full time
    • Must be a citizen of the United States at the time of applying, a resident of Calcasieu Parish, and a student at DHS

    DeQuincy Alumni Scholarship

    Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the Alumni Scholarship:

    • 2022 DeQuincy High School graduate
    • Participate in at least 1 sport, including cheer. 
    • GPA 3.0 or above
    • No disciplinary record @ DHS. 

    Applications must be turned in to Mrs. Marcantel by Thursday March 28, 2024.

    Rotary Club Scholarship

    The Rotary Club of DeQuincy is excited to announce scholarships for DeQuincy High School students. Students who have a record of successful high school work and who will be applying to any accredited two-year community/technical college or four-year university, are eligible to apply. e scholarships are based on both current academic success and need. The Rotary Club of DeQuincy will give one $500 scholarship in May based on academic success and need.  

    The requirements are as follows:

    1 Students must be a 2023 graduating senior from DeQuincy High School

    2. Students must have at least a 3.0 high school cumulative grade point average.

    3. Students must attend a 4-year university or a technical school for the Fall 2023 Semester.

    4. Students must participate in at least two (2) extracurricular activities, including sports teams and school organizations.

    5. The scholarship funds will be paid to the recipients at the beginning of the semester upon presentation of a high school transcript and invoice from the university you will attend.

    23-24 Rotary Club Scholarship Application

    Hagan Foundation Scholarship
    The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, providing recipients with the opportunity to graduate from college debt-free. The scholarship provides up to $7500 each semester for up to 8 semesters. Students must maintain a 3.25 college GPA and a four year or less graduation schedule. Must earn fourteen each fall semester and thirty credit hours each academic year while in college. 
     

    Eligibility Requirements
    1. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
    2. You must attend a traditional public high school located in the U.S. that is governed by a school district.
    3. Must have achieved a 3.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average.
    4. Must enroll at an Eligible Four-Year College or University the first semester following high school graduation.
    5. Must maintain a four year or less graduation schedule in college.
    6. Must work 240 hours from January 1, 2024 until commencement of the 2024 fall semester in college. Work can be done at recipients discretion. Work must be regularly scheduled employment performed under supervision for compensation.
    7. Applicant’s Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for 2022 Federal Income Tax Purposes must not have exceeded $85,000. “Household Income” is defined as the total income received by all members of a household living under the same roof.
    8. Finalists will be notified in February 2024. Finalists must provide a copy of their FAFSA SAR showing their EFC.
    9. Must apply for Federal and State grants if eligible.
    10. Must not have a felony conviction.

    Justin Demary Memorial Scholarship

    The Justin Demary Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Southwest Louisiana graduating senior who participates in athletics and personifies the following qualities of character that defined Justin's life:

    • Humble Leadership- leading with actions, not words
    • Resilience- fighting through adversity with a positive can-do attitude
    • Intellect- committed to intellectual growth and lifelong learning
    • Tenacity- determined and goal oriented

    Eligibility Requirements

    To be eligible to receive the Justin Demary Memorial Scholarship, a student must meet the following requirements: 

    • Applicant must be a graduating senior from a Southwest Louisiana school in the 5-parish area: Calcasieu, Cameron, Jeff Davis, Allen , Beauregard. 
    • Applicant must be a student-athlete who is a current/former member in good standing of a school-sponsored sport. 
    • Applicant must hold a minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Applicant must furnish a copy of high school transcript, 
    • Applicant must be attending a college, business, career, or trade school in the Fall following graduation as a full-time student. 
    • Applicant must submit a fully completed application, including a personal essay. ( See instructions on application)

    Justin2023-24 Demary Memorial Scholarship

     

    Art Scholarship

    An art scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing an art degree at a 4-year university or 2-year technical college . Students must submit a high school transcript with a 3.0 GPA or higher and submit a portfolio of artwork. 

    Please submit the requested documents to Mrs. Marcantel by Thursday, March 28, 2024. 

    No application is needed.

    Current FFA members are eligible for a number of scholarships.  There is a FFA Scholarship Book in Mr. LaVergne's classroom.

    For students interested in attending a Christian college or seminary.

    The Christian Connector provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2,500  Christian college scholarship drawing and a $1,000 Missions Scholarship Drawing.  Students can simply log in www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in the scholarship drawings.
