October is CYBERSECURITY Awareness Month Week 2: Passwords

Each week in October, Tech Connect will focus on a different critical cybersecurity topic.

Week 1: Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
Week 2: Strong Passwords
Week 3: Identifying and Responding to Phishing Attempts
Week 4: Importance of Updates

CPSB employees who read through the information will find one challenge question at the end. Those who submit the correct response earn an entry to WIN one of 5 iPads to be given away. During the month, each person can earn up to 4 entries with 4 correct responses each week.

Take a moment to read about this week's topic, then submit the correct response to the challenge question for a chance to WIN one of 5 iPads to be given away to CPSB employees!

Hackers are constantly using systems to brute force passwords in order to infiltrate accounts and networks. Brute forcing is when cyber attackers submit a barrage of password combinations in an attempt to get a password right. Many cyber attacks deploy programs that automate the process in a systematic manner.

Check out the chart from Hive Systems (hivesystems.io/password) below to see how long it might take for a hacker to brute force any of your passwords.

Using a combination of at least 10 numbers, upper and lowercase letters, and symbols provides longer protection. More complex passwords provide more protection against cyber attacks.

A strong password contains a long string of a combination of numbers, upper and lowercase letters, and symbols. It also is one without a pattern or commonly used words such as password or your name. The MINIMUM requirements for CPSB passwords are that the password must:

be at least 10 characters in length,
include at least one number,
include at least one upper case letter,
include at least one lower case letter,
include at least one symbol, and
not include your name.

For extra measure, it should not be one that is used elsewhere or ever before in CPSB.
What makes a strong password?

If you know your CPSB password and want to change it, follow these steps.
			1. Login to the computer.
			2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
			3. Click Change a password.
			4. Enter your current password.
			5. Enter your new password and confirm it.
In the password box, you can click the eye symbol to reveal what's been entered.
The experience on an Intune computer is a little different; it will open a webpage to change the password.
