    On Thursday, February 18, Governor John Bel Edwards announced the criteria expansion of those individuals eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. As of today, February 22, all school and daycare teachers and support staff are now eligible.

    The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has once again awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Calcasieu Parish School Board for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019.

    As seniors across the country prepare for the next chapter in life, the ACT test is an important page in their high school journey. Current high school seniors here in Calcasieu Parish have experienced obvious obstacles in attempting to take the test this year. Those hoping to test in the spring were affected by COVID-19, and those hoping to test this fall have been affected by Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

    CPSB Cohort Graduation Rate Rises for Third Straight Year

    For the third consecutive year, the Calcasieu Parish School Board is seeing an increase in the district’s cohort graduation rate, which indicates students graduating on time. The graduation rate for the 2018-2019 school year was 89.2%, a one-point increase over the previous year.

    Athletics are a way of life here in Southwest Louisiana. The ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic has greatly affected the world of sports, and of course, that includes right here in our own community. In recent weeks, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association has given us the opportunity to allow athletes to participate in summer workouts. While we are taking all necessary precautions, plus some, we are certainly grateful to provide a little bit of normalcy for our student athletes.

    Dr. George Reado Retiring from CPSB after Five Decades in Education

    After 53 years of service to public education, Dr. George Reado will be retiring from the Calcasieu Parish School Board. While he most recently served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Schools, Dr. Reado started as a classroom teacher, spent time as a principal and then as a District Supervisor. No matter the title he held, students have always been his primary focus.

    School Reconfiguration Parent Meetings Scheduled

    The Calcasieu Parish School Board will consider a School Reconfiguration plan agenda item at the Budget Committee Meeting on May 26. This plan would affect John F. Kennedy, T.H. Watkins, Combre-Fondel, and J.D. Clifton Elementary Schools. Prior to the Budget Committee Meeting, the Calcasieu Parish School Board will be holding two parent meetings to answer questions and facilitate discussion with the community. Parents, guardians, and community members are invited to attend. A question and answer document about the reconfiguration plan is attached.

    Barbe Senior Named 2020 Cooke College Scholar

    The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has selected Isaac Broussard as one of 118 recipients of its prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program. Broussard, one of only two winners in Louisiana, is a senior at Barbe High School and will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall.

    With rising concerns regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), Governor John Bel Edwards has closed all K-12 schools beginning on Monday, March 16, until April 13. This includes all Calcasieu Parish School Board schools and facilities and all CPSB events. While there has not been a confirmed case within the Calcasieu Parish School Board, we feel this decision is in the best interest of the safety of all faculty, staff and students.

    Barbe Senior Named 2020 Cooke College Scholar Semifinalist

    The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation announced the selection of 477 high school seniors as semifinalists for the prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program. This highly selective scholarship provides high-achieving students with financial need up to $40,000 annually for four years of college, to enable them to attend a top college or university. Isaac Broussard, a senior at Barbe High School, is a semifinalist for the award.

    CPSB Named Interim Provider over Beauregard Head Start

    Beginning February 3, 2020, the Calcasieu Parish School Board will be the new provider for the Head Start Program in Beauregard Parish. Beauregard Head Start will be added as an additional Early Childhood site supported by Calcasieu Parish.
