Harvey Rabbit and Friends joined T.S. Cooley students on Valentine's Day to share valuable life lessons. As in previous years, students were excited to see them, enjoyed the program and learned many important lessons. In the words of one teacher who saw them as a student herself, "They get better every year!"
T.S. Cooley 5th graders recently competed at the regional science fair held at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Colby J. won The NASA Earth System Science Award and the Innovation in Energy Award from the NEED Project. The following students earned the True Solutions - Most Enthusiasm for Science Award: Taylor B., Beau A., McKenna L., and Moriah G. Ethan W. won Best of Elementary and received a plaque and a $150 gift card. The following students placed Honorable Mention: Davin W. - Biomedical and Health Sciences and Anna I. - Earth and Environmental Sciences. The following students placed 3rd: Emmelia B. - Plant Science, McKenna L. – Microbiology, and Brenna B. – Chemistry. The following students placed 2nd: Kelsey M. - Plant Science, Moriah G. – Chemistry, Aidan W. - Biomedical and Health Sciences, CJ B. - Earth and Environmental Sciences, Beau A. - Embedded Systems, Fallon N. - Material Sciences, and Aidan L. - Behavioral and Social Science. The following students placed 1st: Jullien R. – Microbiology, Emma R. - Biomedical and Health Sciences, Colby J. - Earth and Environmental Sciences, Adrian S. – Engineering, Taylor B. - Material Sciences, and Ethan W. - Robotics and Intelligent Machines.
The T.S. Cooley Counselor, Mrs. Brenda Nixon-Thigpen has many responsibilities but when asked what her favorite part of her day is, her answer is interacting and helping her students. They are her number one priority. Thank you for all you do to make T.S. Cooley a wonderful place to shine and grow.
Audrey L.'s Louisiana Iris collage was selected for CPSB's "Louisiana Green" exhibit and her art will be published as the cover page for the district's financial publication.
1st Grader, Owen A.'s artwork was chosen from over 150 entries to hang in Mayor Nic Hunter's office for a year as part of the 3-2-6 contest.
After many hours of practice with their choir instructor Ms. Annette Larsen, T.S. Cooley honor choir members recently joined honor choirs from across the parish for a performance at McNeese State University. Honor choir members are Victoria A., Marleigh A., Lia B., Emmelia B., Taylor B., Aidan L., Emma R., Adrian S. and McKenna T.
Recently the 5th grade BETA members attended the State Convention at the Louisiana Cajun Dome in Lafayette. They had many memorable experiences and proudly represented T.S. Cooley in multiple events and competitions. Henry P. won 1st place in Science. Brenna B. won 2nd place in Poetry. The Quiz Bowl Team comprised of Nylah P., Taylor B., Ethan S. and Ethan W. won 3rd place. Anna I., Emma R. and Fallon N. competed together in Communications and Marketing and placed 4th. In Book Battle, team members, Peyton A., CJ B. and Sara H. placed 4th and in Technology, Jai P. and teammate Tyreeq B. placed 2nd. Next stop for these students: Nationals in Oklahoma!
Three T.S. Cooley students placed at The Chess Academy Camp on Saturday, February 2. Yasna J. placed 3rd in the Beginners/Novice Section. Kalra K. placed 3rd in the Intermediate Section. It was a great night with a full line of up of fantastic acts. The overall winning performance was an outstanding Lip Sync performance of I'm a Lady by a 7 member group of 3rd graders comprised of Londyn B., Breyah D. Congratulations to Kunsh K. in Mrs. Stroud's 3rd grade class. He was the overall Spelling Bee Champion. Thirteen 3rd - 5th grade 1st and 2nd place class winners competed for the top prize. Students at T.S. Cooley Submitted Coloring the Flag, Drawing the Flag and Essays for the Americanism Contest to the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary Post 2130. Winners in the kindergarten coloring flag category were: 1st place - Maraget D., 2nd place - Nathan W., and 3rd place - Elsie T. The winners in the 1st and second grade category were: 1st place - Aileen R. and 2nd place - Kiley L. The winner in the 3rd and 4th grade category was: 1st place - Lilli D. and in the 5th grade essay category: 1st place - Kelsey M., 2nd place - Sara H. and Honorable Mention - Nylah P.
T.S. Cooley was one of only 349 schools to be recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2018. The recognition is based on a school's overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
