Learn to Drive the School Bus

Calcasieu Parish School Board will host a pre-service and behind-the-wheel training for substitute school bus drivers at the Calcasieu Parish School Board Department of Transportation Office located at 3310 Broad Street on the dates and times shown below.  Completing this course is required by the Louisiana Department of Education and Calcasieu Parish School Board policy for all persons who want to become a certified Louisiana substitute school bus driver.  All classes will be held in the upstairs classroom at the Transportation Office at 3310 Broad Street.  Please dress comfortably for all training sessions, especially on Saturdays.  Saturday will be an all-day hands-on training on how to pre-trip the school bus, so getting dirty is a possibility.

If you are new to CPSB, you must follow a different procedure.  Your link and instructions can be found at this link.

Message from Our Director Aaron McDonald

Good evening! Some of you have asked for a DIY to help with the removal of ice in the mornings (conditions will remain cold until this time next week).

  1. To get ice off a windshield quickly, spray it with a mixture of two parts isopropyl alcohol and one part water (optionally with a few drops of dish soap). If applicable, turn on your defroster to high heat and activate the AC to dehumidify, while using a plastic scraper to remove loosened ice.

And following these recommendations will limit battery jump callouts:

  1. Battery switches are turned off daily, and fluid levelsare  appropriate
  2. Idle for 5-10 minutes on days when you don’t drive your bus.
  3. Get to your bus 15-20 minutes earlier to allow warm-up time inside the bus (ask ridership to be aware of heaters – we have had a few incidents where children were burned)
  4. When pre-tripping, tap/hit the hood and side panels – animals seek warm shelter overnight
  5. Make sure heater valves are working correctly
  6. Park with the engine facing South (towards Cameron Parish)
  1. Payroll collection starts tomorrow through the end of the day Thursday.
  2. W-2s are ready for pick-up with Mrs. Phyllis; you do not need to sign for them.
  3. Mrs. Charlene has 2 spots left for her district-wide SpEd field trip day next month (February 24th):

1-LaGrange (9-11) Route Bus

1-Sulphur HS (1-2:30) Lift bus

  1. We are monitoring current conditions, as well as future forecasts for this weekend’s trips and the start of next week.  Any information/changes will be communicated with your Ward Captain and then shared in a departmental email.
