  • Touch the Sun

NASA is launching a solar probe this summer in the late July/early August window. The probe will come within 4 million miles of the sun's photosphere(the surface). The sun is 93 million miles away from Earth, so that is getting pretty close since it surface temperature is about 10,000 degrees F. Among other things, the probe will send back data that is related to the solar flares that happen on the sun. These gases from these flares sometimes make it to our atmosphere, and cause communication problems via all our satellites that we depend on for communication and defense purposes. Sometimes these gases interact with our magnetic field and create the northern lights! Cool, huh? NASA is offering the opportunity for anyone to submit their name to be put on a memory card(micro chip) that will travel with the probe, thus, your name touches the sun! For more information, please check with Ms. Brooks (5th Grade Science Teacher) or see the link on the left hand side.
