NASA is launching a solar probe this summer in the late July/early August window. The probe will come within 4 million miles of the sun's photosphere(the surface). The sun is 93 million miles away from Earth, so that is getting pretty close since it surface temperature is about 10,000 degrees F. Among other things, the probe will send back data that is related to the solar flares that happen on the sun. These gases from these flares sometimes make it to our atmosphere, and cause communication problems via all our satellites that we depend on for communication and defense purposes. Sometimes these gases interact with our magnetic field and create the northern lights! Cool, huh? NASA is offering the opportunity for anyone to submit their name to be put on a memory card(micro chip) that will travel with the probe, thus, your name touches the sun! For more information, please check with Ms. Brooks (5th Grade Science Teacher) or see the link on the left hand side.
Every school year the CPSB Art Studio, asks art teachers to submit student work for a juried exhibition. We are proud to announce that for the second year in a row DES student work was chosen to be exhibited! 5th grade student Ali Richard's "Rainbow Trout" has been on exhibit in the CPSB Petite Gallery. The exhibition closed on February 23, but Ali has agreed to allow her artwork to be displayed in the DeQuincy Elementary lobby through the end of March! We invite you to come to the school to check out this great piece of artwork!
February 1, 2018 students at DeQuincy Elementary got to start their hands on project in Ms. Miller’s classroom; a vegetable garden. Ms. Miller was a recipient of the Brach Out and Grow Grant that funded $1,292 by the Junior League of Lake Charles. Along with the Junior League of Lake Charles, Cameron LNG also provided funds and free labor for the Garden. In the picture above Cameron LNG presented a $1,000 check to Growing Minds, Growing Gardens project. DES is hosted a "Louisiana Night" on February 2nd. The night was loaded with lots delicious food, tons of fun, and lots of laughs. Students and parents were able to enjoy BINGO, music, pictures, and food. We would like to give a SHOUT OUT to Prejean’s and Comeaux’s for donating items for prizes during the BINGO games. Thank you all for a FANTASTIC night of FUN!
