Mr. Phillip P. Oliver

Phillip P. Oliver is a native of Westlake, LA. He attended McNeese State University were he studied trombone with Professor William G. Rose and instrumental conducting with Dr. Jeffery J. Lemke, graduating with a Bachelors of Music Education in Instrumental Music. During his time at McNeese, he participated in numerous instrumental and vocal ensembles, and performed in orchestras for several theatrical productions. Mr. Oliver served as sectional leader and equipment manager for "The Pride of McNeese" Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band, principal trombonist for the MSU Wind Symphony, and lead trombone for the MSU Jazz Band. Mr. Oliver continued his musical studies at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he received a Master of Music.

Mr. Oliver has performed with many notable musical acts including Marcia Ball, Jason Marsalis, Marcus Roberts Trio, Bobby Sanabria, Bill Churchville, Jeff Gardner, Roberto Sion e Campagne, the Boston Brass, Arturo O'Farrill, and the Voices of London. He was also afforded the opportunity in 2010 to tour with the MSU Jazz Band and University of Northern Colorado Big Band in Romania as an alumni guest performer. Mr. Oliver remains an active performer in the communtity.

Mr. Oliver's professional experience includes several years at Sam Houston High School and Moss Bluff Middle School, where he served as Assistant Director of Bands, assisting with the "Pride & Spirit" Marching Band and serving as Director of the Sam Houston High School Concert Band and Jazz Band. He served as District V High School Buccaneer Honor Band Chairman for 2009, 2010, and 2011 and was also selected as a clinician and director for the 2011 Calcasieu Parish LCB Academy Band, which received a "Superior" rating at the LMEA District V Large Ensemble Assessment. Mr. Oliver spent a year at Iowa High School as the Director of Performing Arts, directing the "Pride of Jacketland" Marching Band, IHS Basketball Pep Band, and the IHS Choir, before coming to W.W. Lewis Middle School in the fall of 2014. He also currently chairs the LMEA District V Jazz Committee over seeing auditions and clincics for the District Jazz Honor Bands.

Mr. Oliver's professional affiliations include: Louisiana Music Educators' Association, Texas Music Educators' Association, Louisiana Association for Jazz Education, Louisiana Bandmasters' Association, Texas Bandmasters' Association, Percussive Arts Society, Jazz Education Network, Organization of American Kodály Educators, LMEA District V Band and Orchestra Directors' Association, Alumni Member of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity, and Alumni Member of Phi Mu Alpha, Sinfonia Music Fraternity.

Mr. Oliver is married to Rachel Frederick of Sulphur and the proud father of three girls: Amelia, Miriam, and Evelyn. He is a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Westlake.
