CPSB again outperforms state in School Performance Scores, middle schools show largest growth
The Calcasieu Parish School Board has once again outperformed the state in overall School Performance Scores, with today’s release from the Louisiana Department of Education showing particularly significant gains at the middle school level. The district’s current score of 87.2 does show a slight decrease from last year’s 87.5, but the district maintains its B letter grade while showing great strides in schools across the parish. The district’s score is over six points ahead of the state’s score of 80.9.
“Our students, teachers, and school leaders continue to prove what is possible when high expectations are paired with intentionality,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason VanMetre. “Seeing CPSB once again outperform the state reflects our commitment to academic achievement, targeted support, and high-quality instruction.”
Right at 94% of CPSB students are now in an A, B, or C school. In the progress component of the state accountability system, all schools earned a C or better, with 53 (96%) of those schools earning an A or B. Of CPSB’s top ten schools in overall growth, six are middle schools. The district’s top growing schools are listed below.

When looking at overall LEAP performance in K-12, the district showed improvement, as well as showing improvement by two points in overall growth of K-12 students.
Fifteen elementary and ten middle schools exhibited growth. Two middle schools achieved A letter grades, showcasing the highest performance of CPSB middle schools in recent years.
“The growth we’re seeing in our middle schools is especially encouraging,” Dr. VanMetre said. “These results show that strong leadership paired with strategic investments in instruction, intervention, and student engagement are making a real difference, and we will continue building foundations on this momentum.”
In addition, the district saw 31 schools earn Top Gains status, up from 18 last year, meaning the school earned a progress index equivalent to an ‘A’ and did not earn any Urgent Intervention Required labels for student groups and/or discipline. Ten schools were named Opportunity Honorees, up from four last year, earning recognition for being in the top 10% for performance among students with Disability, English Learners, or Economically Disadvantaged students. Eight schools in the district earned both, an increase over just five from last year.
This is the last year that school districts in Louisiana will be assessed based on the current tool. Next year, the Louisiana Department of Education will be utilizing a new grading scale for schools and districts.
