School Threat Information

We want to address the recent string of incidents involving potentially threatening behavior directed towards several of our campuses and how they are handled internally. These incidents are serious matters, and it is important for us to keep the community informed.

We want to address the recent string of incidents involving potentially threatening behavior directed towards several of our campuses and how they are handled internally. These incidents are serious matters, and it is important for us to keep the community informed.

When the Calcasieu Parish School Board becomes aware of a potential threat or potentially threatening behavior, an investigation begins immediately at the school level. We consider a potential threat or potentially threatening behavior to be remarks and/or gestures made by anyone, including a student, that alludes to harm being caused at a school. While these situations are initially classified as potentially threatening, we handle all of them with immediate action regardless of the individual’s intentions.

Each incident is investigated by the school administration to determine further details such as where the threat originated, who initiated the threat, and the level of credibility. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is always alongside us to provide assistance and/or conduct their own criminal investigation when necessary.

When enough initial details are gathered about an incident, a phone call is placed to parents informing them of the situation. We understand the desire of parents and of the community to remain informed as these situations develop. We assure you that informing our families is very important to us, and we will always do our best to provide as much information as we possibly can. It is important to remember that the overwhelming majority of these incidents involve juveniles, which significantly limits what information we can legally release as a school district. We cannot release what disciplinary action is taken against a student, where that student is located, or any other specific information about the student. While we do specify whether the potential threat was made on social media, we do not release additional details as we do not want to do anything that could jeopardize a potential criminal investigation.

When a general phone call is sent by the school or district, it goes to the one primary number associated with a student in the CPSB student information program, Student Progress Center. To ensure you receive all phone calls from your student’s school, make sure the primary number is a number you often have access to, like a cell phone number instead of a home phone number. This change can be made by logging into Student Progress Center or by calling the school office.

Use of the terms “shoot up a school” or “destroy a school” leads to an immediate school investigation and notification of law enforcement. Even when a student has an angry moment or claims a joking threat, school tragedies around our country force all stakeholders to take these threats seriously. It is so important for parents and guardians to have a conversation with their students informing them that threats against a school in any capacity will likely lead to school expulsion and could lead to a criminal charge. Please take some time and talk to your students about the seriousness of this matter.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our number one priority. Our teachers, principals, and district-level staff work hard every day to provide a safe learning environment to our over 28,000 students.
