Upward Bound is targeting rising freshmen (current 8th graders in area middle schools) who will attend Washington Marion and LaGrange High School in Lake Charles, LA. We are also targeting current freshmen and sophomores who attend these schools. Selection is based upon GPA, income requirements, and whether the student will be a first-generation college student (neither parent has a 4-year degree). Also, spots are limited. This program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Funding serves up to 72 students.
Students remain in the program until they graduate from high school. We offer weekly tutorials, college tours/cultural visits (in-state and out-of- state), career and academic advising, a six-week summer academy, financial planning for college, and summer bridge scholarships. Additionally, participants receive a bimonthly stipend for participation. All costs are paid by the Upward Bound Program. Commitment from the participant is important to the participants' success with college entry.
