Happy Birthday Maplewood!
Maplewood has a unique history in that it was a community born out of necessity, created in 1944 for workers from six different states who built and operated Cities Service—now Citgo, the first oil refinery in west Calcasieu Parish. The original community had a federal post office, 800 houses, a school, a library, churches, and a population of more than 4,000 people. Maplewood Elementary School opened in September, 1944, with an enrollment of approximately 400 students. The "junior high" building—now Maple-wood Middle School—was added in 1956. New additions and renovations were com-pleted in 2003 with two other pods of classrooms added in 2005 and 2009. The most re-cent bond project has included the addition of another pod, a band/chorus hall, audito-rium, cafeteria extension, two story instructional building with a media center, and reno-vation of the Gym, all completed in 2013. In 2014, Maplewood was separated into two independent schools—elementary and middle. Today Maplewood Schools have a total enrollment of over 1100 with approximately 375 students in grades 6-8. We share our cafeteria and auditorium, but the majority of the middle school facility is on the west half of the plant.
