Free Dental Health Education

Area Health Education Centers for a Healthy Louisiana (AHL) has announced a statewide project to provide dental care and education through schools, a project that will reach more than 41,000 Louisiana children, mostly in underserved rural areas. The project is funded through a grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, which will be matched by AHL.  This program is “AHEC of a Smile”.

Across the state, dental care is the most prevalent unmet health need of children. Louisiana has one of the higher rates of recent routine medical check-ups but one of the lowest rates for dental visits, with particularly high disparities in rural areas. Of the 800,000 Medicaid eligible children in Louisiana, only 47% received any dental service last year — leaving over 400,000 children without preventative oral health treatment.

During this time of quarantine, we've created a facebook page that we will periodically post fun activities and really cool dental health education for our students.  Students have the opportunity to post pictures and win some really neat dental health prizes! The target population is 6-14 year olds.
