Maplewood Band Director Again Named Semifinalist for GRAMMY®
Maplewood Middle School Band Director Huber “Mickey” Smith Jr. has once again been nominated for a GRAMMY® award. This is Smith’s third time to be named a national semifinalist for the Music Educator Award™, presented by the Recording Academy™ and the GRAMMY Museum®.
“More than anything, for me teaching is about providing a space that develops the awareness, trust, and perseverance to help students discover their sound,” said Smith. “Their sound is their unique personal significance. I believe that every child is one sound adult away from discovering that sound. Being recognized by the GRAMMYS is a powerful reminder that what educators bring to the classroom personally and professionally matters as much as the subject matter. Through my music and message, I hope to encourage educators and students alike to keep on going and let us all be the sound to change the world.”
The award was established to recognize educators who make a lasting impact on students’ lives and who continuously show dedication to the field of music education. The 25 semifinalists for the 2020 Music Educator Award™ were chosen from more than 2,800 initial nominations from around the country. Ten finalists will be announced in December, and a winner will be announced during GRAMMY® Week 2020.
